Organizing A Bridal Shower: Gifts, Games And Goody Bags

Congratulations! Your best friend is about to get married and she has asked you to be her maid of honor. You know what that means right? Well, yes. It does generally mean you get to wear a fairly ugly taffeta dress that will never come out of your closet ever again and shoes that pinch your toes into misshapen lumps. But, it also mean that you will be in charge of arranging a bridal shower. If you have been friends with the bride for a long time, then you are probably fairly friendly with her mother which can be a big help, but if not, then you should keep the following tips in mind:

1. Simple and elegant are always welcome. If budgeting is a problem, (and when isn’t it) then stick with a short menu and opt for a venue that will cost very little. Small sandwiches, tea or coffee and some bottle water can serve well, especially if you add a nice cake or other fanciful dessert to round it out.

2. Check out the Internet for ideas for games and activities to do during the bridal shower. Remember though, the bride should be the focal point so don’t allow any of the games or other fun events to take the spotlight from her.

3. Consider making the bridal shower a spa event for the bride, her mother and a select group of the bridal party. (If the bride would miss the shower, then save this for part of the bachelorette party.)

4. Consider making the party a couple’s event and include the groom-to-be as well. Many brides are pulling away from the traditional ceremonies, including the woman only bridal shower.

Once you have narrowed down the type of party that you would like to have, you can start working on both the menu and the guest list. Remember when making your menu that you will not be able to please everybody all of the time and there will always be one finicky or allergic to everything guest that will complain no matter what you serve. Try to keep your cool and deal with them the best that you can.

After the menu and guests are firmed up, you can work on the games or other activities that you plan to do. Again, research games on the Internet or in the library, but you cannot go wrong with some of the classics. These include:

1. Match the photo with the adult. Have each guest bring a baby photo of themselves and award a prize for the person who can match the most correctly.

2. Wedding kisses. Hand each guest a pair of felt lips and then have them collect them from other guests for each time they hear a certain word. (Words could be anything, as long as it is a fairly common one.)

3. Bridal mad libs. Have someone right down the bride’s responses to her gifts as she opens them and then read them back as the answers to pre-selected questions. This one always goes over very well. Make sure that you plan enough time for opening gifts and playing at least one or two games. Decide whether eating will be the first thing you do, or the last. And as with everything, make sure that you plan some time out of your hosting duties to enjoy yourself as well.
