Saving Money on A Wedding: 9 Tips

The average cost for a wedding in America is $28,671, not including the honeymoon. If you live in New York, expenses can hit $70,000! Is it possible to have a special wedding day without mortgaging your future? Yes, it is possible with careful planning and wise choices. The size of the wedding drives 80% of the expenses. Here are 9 tips to reduce the cost and still have a special day that you will remember for the rest of your life.

Tip #1: Save money by not hiring a wedding planner. When I married my wife, we planned our own wedding using pen and paper lists. Today there are many helpful tools available on the web. Search on Google “wedding planning tools” to discover free or low cost sites.

Tip #2: Carefully consider the invitation list. Each plate for a dinner can cost $15 to $100 or more. The more people you invite, the greater the cost to your wedding. A wedding of 24 people is more cost effective than a wedding of 150.

Set priorities. Consider your parents, siblings and their spouses, grandparents and old friends. Tell everyone that the wedding is small and no favoritism will play a part in developing the invitation list. My wife and I were in our mid-thirties when we got married and we had to exclude our work friends. They took it well and threw a pre-wedding party for us.

Tip #3: Timing. You can save money on the reception hall by thinking outside of the box. Consider having the reception on a weekday for a substantial discount over the weekend price.

Tip #4: Rent a building not normally considered for a reception. Many areas have restored historic buildings that can be rented for receptions and provide ambiance as well. Why not consider a spot for a garden wedding? Be creative and look in your community for a unique location.

Tip #5: Consider your church or house of worship. Most have “Fellowship Halls” that are ideal for receptions. The cost to rent is minimal due to your membership.

Tip #6: If you use your church’s fellowship hall, ask if the Ladies’ Auxiliary can provide food and beverages. Usually, they will do it at a drastically reduced price.

Tip #7: Do you really want to provide a meal? There are alternatives that are acceptable. Consider the following options:

A. Have a Dessert Buffet: Ask your friends if they would like to donate their favorite dessert in lieu of a wedding present.

B. Hors d’oeuvre Buffet: Sam’s Club and Costco have a variety of inexpensive selections.

C. Beverage Bar: This doesn’t have to be expensive. Providing punch is certainly a time-honored tradition compared to an open bar.

Inform your guests on the invitation the type of refreshments to be provided so they can plan accordingly.

Tip #8: Provide your own music. Use your playlist on your iPod and play the music you want to hear and not depend on a DJ to do it. Take your iPod and plug it into a sound system and enjoy your celebration.

Tip #9: Wedding decorations and Invitations. Crafts shops like Hobby Lobby and Michaels have cost effective decorations. Decide on colors & theme early to take advantage of sales. Also, inexpensive wedding invitation kits, with classy graphics and fonts, can be purchased at office supply stores.

The key to a stress free, cost effective wedding is to plan. Plan the work, work the plan and stick to the details and the budget. This is your day. Be sure that you don't overspend yourself into debt. One option to consider is an elopement. Gatlinburg weddings for two makes it extremely affordable. In either case, have you’re wedding your way and save!
