In this installment of wedding photography tips for brides, we address the issue of whether or not to see your groom before the ceremony. This one decision will largely effect the flow of your day. Certainly, a wedding day can function well either way. It really comes down to knowing what the trade-offs are for either decision. As someone who has photographed over 400 weddings, my recommendation, if you are willing, would be to see each other before the ceremony. This way, you can have all your formal photographs taken and be able to proceed directly to the reception after you say 'I DO'. Below I offer some tips for either way - to see eachother before hand or not.

To see each other before the ceremony...

Wedding Photography Tips for Brides #1 - Plan a 'First Moment'

The first moment when your groom sees you should be special! You've put a lot of time and energy into looking this gorgeous - don't let that moment when he first sees you get lost in the shuffle. Arrange to have a 'First Moment' with your groom. This can be set up by your photographer. Typically, the groom is waiting somewhere for the bride facing away- the alter, a gazebo or somewhere discreet where it is just the two of you. The bride walks to the groom and tells him when to turn around. You get to spend a few moments together and connect. The photographer can take a few photos of this moment and then step away to give you more privacy if needed.

Wedding Photography Tips for Brides #2 - Be Photographed First

After the first moment is done, I recommend the formal photographs begin with the bride and groom. For a couple of reasons. One your makeup is at it's freshest. Two, it gives you more bonding time together before the craziness of the day intercedes.

I believe by following the above two tips you actually have more quality time with your honey on your wedding day! Now after your ceremony is over, you can proceed directly to your reception. Allow your guests to arrive at the reception ahead of you so you can be announced by the DJ and make your grand entrance.

Wedding Photography Tips for Brides #1 - Let Your Guests Know

I suggest you inform your guests to expect a delay. This easiest way to do this is have your minister make an announcement after you and your groom have walked back up the aisle. Something like, "Please continue onto the reception site. The bride and groom will be finishing up photographs and joining you shortly." This small, little courtesy will make for happier guests.

Wedding Photography Tips for Brides #2 - Keep Them Happy

Food and drink tend to keep people happy while waiting for your arrival. Including a cocktail hour with an open bar and hors d'oeuvres is another nice touch. Picture a group of people that have a glass of wine in hand and fun appetisers to munch on. Then picture the group that has punch to drink and some nuts munch on - definitely not as happy!

Keep these wedding photography tips in mind when considering which way is best for you and your groom. Don't feel pressured into seeing each other before hand if you don't want to - this is your wedding day. If you and your groom are willing, I would recommend seeing each other before the ceremony. This way tends to be less stressful for all involved and helps to streamline the day so no one is feeling rushed or left waiting.
