Here’s how: buy those individual portion packs of yoghurt (the low-fat or no-fat ones without sugar-laden fruit at the bottom are best) and have one with one serving of fresh fruit. Your best choices: a small apple or half a grapefruit or about a cup of berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries) or half a small cantaloupe. This easy meal is perfect for ‘waking up’ your metabolism in the morning.
  2. Drink more water is weight loss secret #2. We’ve all been told to do this; yet most people avoid drinking the 8 glasses of water a day that is recommended. There are plenty of excuses – don’t care for the taste is the most common. If you space out your glasses of water, starting with a large glass as soon as you wake up and then another large glass before each meal and, finally, one glass of water in the evening, it makes it easier.

  4. Here’s a really simple weight loss secret: Use a smaller plate. Exchange your dinner plate for something a bit smaller, such as a picnic set plate. One third of this plate should be a dark-colored vegetable (such as broccoli, spinach, salad greens); one third should be protein (lean meat, skinless chicken, fish) and one third fruit or other healthy carbs.
  5. Create non-food rewards. How often have you ‘rewarded’ yourself with a donut? Or a calorie-laden chocolate latte? Or a soup bowl of ice cream? You don’t have to totally banish any of these (in moderation) but you do need to develop some non-food rewards. Some ideas: a walk in the park, a new pair of earrings (perhaps for losing 5 pounds) or a weekend getaway to plan and look forward to.
