According to experts a lot of people experience boredom in training (or training plateau) either during their early weight loss efforts or when they are given a fitness program that requires long workouts. If you are in a situation like this, you need to do something quick to recovery fading interest.
First, if you have long workout routines and you are starting to get bored, consider shifting to shorter workouts that can deliver the same or greater results. Fitness programs have already reached a new level and workouts are now shorter and more effective.
To speed up weight loss but keep your interest intact, try these five ways to improve weight loss:
(1) Spend time under the sun. When you have time, work out in the outdoors and spend time under direct sunlight because it will not only give you the great health benefits of free vitamin D from the sun (which has no overdose) it also reduces your stress and tension. And aside from the fact that sunlight is a good stress-reliever, it also improves your muscle strength; relieves body aches; reduces respiratory infection; and regulates blood pressure while you enjoy fresh air and nature.
(2) Use your ancient genes. Human genes haven’t changed much since the ancient times, but the way we eat today has changed a lot. There were records showing that our ancestors ate in small portions coming from natural and seasonal foods that grew on the earth. And they ate variety of foods which could have led to a balanced nutrition and longer life span. But what’s important about eating in small portions is that while you savor the food you eat, you are also helping your brain and stomach communicate with each other properly. It usually takes around 20 minutes before your stomach can signal your brain that you have eaten enough.
(3) Avoid frustrations in workout. Determine the best time of the day for your workout where your body and mind is most active. It is especially motivating if you can exercise together with a group for added thrill and support. And also don’t forget your pre-workout nutrition to have enough energy to carry out your exercises, because without energy, your workout experience will be hard. And when you can, take time with your friends and loved ones – laugh and have fun. Share also your progress in training and I’m sure you’ll feel more motivated after receiving compliments from them.
(4) Exert more effort. Something good and new is always interesting to the human mind. Pushing yourself a little more whether if it's walking in a faster pace, adding another kilometer to your jogging, adding one more workout set, or reducing rest period will keep your body and mind stimulated at the same time you are building stronger muscles that will help increase metabolism for a faster weight loss. But do this gradually, like making changes after 2-4 weeks of doing the same exercises or when you feel stronger.
(5) Gradually change your eating habits. For best results, you should follow the meal plans listed in your fitness program (if you have one) but if you have difficulty in changing your eating habits, make changes gradually. The adjustment to everything, from exercise to healthy diet, could be too much. So, changing one food at a time is a good approach. And when you start to like healthy foods, you will also start to dislike junk food.
I hope you find this article useful. If you have something to share, please feel free to comment.
When I was younger I used to train a lot. lately I feel like it is so boring! So, yes I can say it is true! I have also discovered through personal experience that apart from all other factors, stress was a major block for my metabolism when I wanted to lose weight. Really nice article Lemuel!
Good information. Great article. Cute photo! Yes, I had a spoonful of almond-butter (ground almonds) before walking to Mass this morning. It gave me energy and kept me sparkling:-) First time in a week - I tripped over my dad's oxygen line and went flying. Quite a spectactular three bounce landing. Including the knock out blow of head going Crack! on the tile floor. Thanks for a good article. Yes - with all the Greek yogurt and fruit I'm eating now junk food lost the allure...
Thanks. I'm healing well. Experiencing miracles:-) My dad's healing and gaining strength. Yes, healthy foods help. We're turning rhubarb from the garden into dessert today - mix with strawberries and a bit of sugar and cook on the stove. Yum! Healthy and good on cereal and yogurt in the morning too.
Good information Lemuel, completely agree with your last sentence I find it very difficult to eat junk food now.
Exercise workouts under the sun in fresh air are always best, but most of the time I work out in my gym. I get bored, but one of the things that makes it possible for me is music. With music, I can go on forever. For people whose work is sedentary, these workouts are life savers. I know coffee has good antioxidant properties, but brain function enhancing is good news. I love coffee and chocolate.
I'm glad music can inspire you during workout. There is a new workout called "complex" exercise that helps stimulate interest in workout again, where instead of repeating the same exercise a couple of reps, you perform all exercises in one sweep, then go back to exercise #1 and do the whole sequence again for the 2nd and 3rd reps. I'll give you an example workout: Barbell Complex Sequence 1 rep: barbell clean and press from floor (explosive lift of barbell from floor to “catch” on front shoulders in one motion, then push-press overhead); 1 rep: barbell back to thighs, then hang clean (explosively pull bar from knees and “catch” the bar at shoulders); 1 rep: keep barbell at shoulders, then front squat; 1 rep: barbell back to thighs, bend over, then bent over row; 1 rep: barbell back to thighs, then finish with Romanian deadlift repeat each rep of the sequence 2-3 times This is the simplest sequence and there are also advanced complex exercises using kettlebell and dumbbell.
These are important foci more than 'tips', I should think--all are required more than recommended. But this article is wrong for me--I've always felt the best way to self-change or self-improvement is to use the buddy system. Finding someone with similar goals and similar schedules isn't easy, but it beats having ones fitness regimen be an isolating experience. I'd also like to point out that, while their diets may have been perfect for their DNA, early man did NOT have a longer life-span than modern people. Other than that, good article, Lemuel!
Thank you Chris. I think I overlooked buddy system workout, although I had that in mind since I featured an image of group exercise. I should add it here. About longer life span of ancestors, there are records that show some have reached 500 years and most over 100 years, although records didn't specify that healthy eating was the cause of this long life (since there were no junk foods at that time), I just figured it was their healthy diet that made them live longer. Anyway, what I wanted to emphasize is eating in small portions, which is helpful in preventing weight gain.
You forgot the important one, have a bar of dark chocolate before going to bed....notice I said dark chocolate...
Despite my initial reaction to your comment Rob on second thought I'm thinking you might have something in this one. Lemuel I really liked this article and advice. I could relate to the need to keep things interesting for the mind. While I find exercise un-stimulating at the best of times it is ironically when the mind is free to play. I'm feeling really confused on this concept obviously! ;-)
Hi Heather. I just made some changes to improve this article. Keeping things interesting for the mind is a major challenge in the fitness world. That's why workout routines keep changing (but for the better). It's amazing how the brain could signal "boring" after the body performs same activity over and over again. But when there is a new stimulus, the brain's instinct is to label it as "interesting".
Finally I understand why I'm so darn clever! Thank you Lemuel! Off to brew some coffee to celebrate!
No wonder I'm more clever than Heather, I slab a day makes a Einstein of me, much better than coffee...
