To a certain degree, after baby weight loss happens naturally because you have obviously loss the weight of your baby and a lot of amniotic fluid and blood. For many, this is not enough to get the pre-baby body back. Unfortunately many have to really work at losing the extra kilos, but fortunately it is definitely possible.
It is commonly thought that after baby weight loss will happen without effort, if the mother breastfeeds her baby. I've even heard it said that women can eat anything they want while they are breastfeeding and still lose the weight they desire to! I am sure it has happened, but I think this only applies to a small minority of women. Many women I know have to work hard to achieve their after baby weight loss.
While it is a good thing to get back to your pre-pregnancy body weight, not only for health reasons, but also for your self-esteem too. This is because so many of us feel enormous in the latter stages of pregnancy and don't enjoy that feeling, so obviously feeling good in our own skin is certainly important.
After baby weight loss can be very difficult because of the huge time demands that are placed on women, particularly through the night, which makes for very sleep deprived women who have almost no time to themselves and to look after themselves. Scientists have found that sleep deprivation is counter productive to weight loss efforts and this does make sense because when we are tired, it is difficult to be motivated about anything and we often grab high energy food to give ourselves a pick-me-up.
Having said all of this, it is possible to be successful with after baby weight loss efforts. It is something that will take time, so be persistent with your efforts, also get creative. It is hard to join a gym and spend hours a day working out (unless you can afford to have full-time nannies to help you). Why not try doing for a walk with your baby in the pram or try some sit ups while your baby is having some floor time. These two ideas may not be what you can or would like to do, but the point is to be creative and multi-task, which is something women do exceedingly well.
If you are seeking after baby weight loss, then eating good food is really important, not just for weight loss, but for your own health and well being. Avoid the junk food and if finding the time to prepare health meals is very difficult, then do your best. Try grabbing for fruit as a energy boost rather than the chocolate. Of course all this is easier said than done.
Good luck with after baby weight loss efforts and remember to be kind to yourself and know that success will be gradual.
