If you suffer from anxiety you know how debilitating it can be and how it can take over your life. And anxiety is often accompanied by depression, weight gain and other related conditions which may in turn increase your anxiety levels. While your symptoms may benefit from medical intervention, there are a number of natural remedies for anxiety symptoms which can help you enjoy life more and make it possible for you to shed a few pounds at the same time.

What is the connection between anxiety and weight gain? There are a number of possibilities. Anxiety may cause some people to eat more as a way to cope with the stress of this condition; and if the foods they seek are high fat comfort foods the chances of weight gain are even greater. If your anxiety makes you prone to depression you may be more likely to stay home, forgo exercise, and eat quick and easy junk food rather than cook delicious healthy meals.

A 2009 British study published in the BMJ followed 4000 civil servants for 20 years. Although not obese to begin with, those who suffered from anxiety, depression or other mental conditions were more likely to become obese over time. Those who suffered one of more mental disorders at least three times during twenty years were twice as likely to be obese as those without this history.

There are a variety of remedies for anxiety, however three stand out as being safe natural and easily available from health and natural grocery stores.

Chamomile. Known primarily as a sleep aid, studies show chamomile can also be effective for reducing symptoms of anxiety. In an 8 week study at the University of Pennsylvania, 57 participants received either chamomile capsules or a placebo and were then evaluated on standard tests for measuring anxiety. Results showed chamomile was associated with a greater reduction in anxiety scores than the placebo and the results were statistically significant.

Valerian. For hundreds of years people have been using valerian as a sleep aid and to calm anxiety. It has been approved for use as a mild sedative in Germany, and the FDA has given it a GRAS (generally recognized as safe) rating in this country according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The reasons for its effectiveness may be that it increases the amount of GABA, a chemical which is found in the brain and is known to relax muscle tension and calm anxiety.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Omega-3's are found in fish and fish oil capsules or for vegetarians in flax, hemp or chia. In a 2011 study of 68 medical students, participants received either an omega-3 capsule or a placebo for 12 weeks. Subjects gave blood at low stress times and before exams. Results showed a 20% decrease in anxiety in the omega-3 group compared to the controls.

If you experience anxiety and weight is a challenge, give these natural remedies a try. Hopefully your symptoms of anxiety and stress will diminish and you will have more energy to get out and exercise or treat yourself to a healthier diet. If nothing else you may enjoy a better night's sleep...and since insomnia is also connected to weight gain this may be another way that these natural foods can benefit your weight loss intentions.
