Today is the day! It’s time to lose weight or get fitter, there always is a good reason, upcoming holiday or scare stories about health. There are some fictitious ideas that we believe about fitness and weight loss, I will cover one here together with tips about weight loss and fitness.

What is overweight and why does it happen? We all know what it is, but let’s take a moment to be absolutely clear about its meaning, being overweight (this includes obesity) result from an energy imbalance. Our bodies need a certain amount of energy (calories) from food to sustain our life functions. Body weight is maintained or balanced when calories eaten equals the number of calories the body uses or “burns.” When we eat more calories than we are burning, our energy balance is tipped towards weight gain and being overweight, if this continues to happen eventually obesity occurs. It also has to be said that some genetic, behavioral and environmental factors can also lead to being overweight.

On a more positive note weight loss happens when a person has a negative energy balance, that is when we exert more energy with exercise and work than we consume (i.e. from food or other nutritional supplements), we start to use up stored reserves of fat or muscle, gradually leading to weight loss.

So we can see that exercise and diet are the key factors in weight loss and fat reduction, just as if you are eating more calories than you are burning off throughout the day the net result will be that these excess calories will be stored as fat.

Now we come to the fictions believed about fitness and weight loss there are lots of them. They can be believable and lead to some confusion and may affect how or even if we reach our goal.

One such fiction is: ‘Exercising more, makes you eat more’.

I am sure you agree this is totally believable, however research has shown that exercise does not have that effect on our hunger; it has been shown to do the opposite and suppress appetite during and after a workout. One possible truth is that our mind takes over, making us want to eat more because we think that we need extra food to compensate for the extra activity. We must try to use mind over matter to avoid taking in extra calories after a workout.

A tip with fitness and weight loss goals is to keep your body guessing. Reaching a weight-loss plateau relatively soon after starting a diet and exercise regimen is a very common complaint. A good tactic is to change your exercise routine and diet every four to six weeks, especially when hitting that weight-loss wall.

Finally try to use a positive mental attitude, you should be able to control the amount and types of foods eaten through careful planning, and limit lazy couch potato times, swap them for regular exercise. The key to successful fitness and weight loss is to combine proper diet with the right physical exercise.
