A quick search of the internet will turn up lots of tips on losing weight. As with many things on the internet, there is a mix of good and bad advice. I’ve seen ideas from the reasonable calorie cutting method to the downright dangerous binge and purge! Here are 5 tips on losing weight just by making small adjustments in your everyday life.

Water quenches your thirst

This one is pretty easy and can make a huge impact on your weight loss. Simply drink water instead of soda. Say each can of regular soda averages around 200 calories, which is probably a little low. If you cut out just ONE can per day, that is 73000 calories per year or about 21lbs! Along with replacing high calorie soda, water will also help you to feel full so you’ll end up eating less too. Many times when we THINK we’re hungry, our body is actually just dehydrated. So the next time you feel hungry, drink a glass of water and wait about 20minutes for your stomach to talk to your brain before you start chowing down.

Use Smaller Plates

Back when I was growing up, I was always told to ‘clean your plate’. Now I could be wrong, but I swear plates have gotten bigger over the years. Today you could fit an entire meal from yesteryear on a single plate! The bigger plate plays tricks on your mind. If you put the same amount of food on a small plate and a big plate, the portion on the bigger plate would look meager in comparison. What this means to you is that if you use a big plate for everyday meals, you will unconsciously be taking and eating bigger portions than you really need.

Dine in Like you Dine Out

It’s pretty well accepted that it’s healthier to cook at home. The problem with eating at home is that you have access to more food. How about eating at home like you would if you went to a restaurant? Instead of bringing all the food to the table and treating it like an all you can eat buffet, dish up one plate of food and that’s it. Either right after you dish it or right after you finish your plate, immediately wrap up the leftovers and put them in the fridge or freezer so you won’t be tempted to go back for seconds.

Slow Down to Slim Down

It takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that it has had enough. In today’s rush and go lifestyle, we eat so fast that we end up over eating before our body can tell us to stop. A couple tricks to slow down could be to tell a story to your partner over dinner. Chew each bite 20-30 times before swallowing. Even just put your utensil down between each bite. Anything to slow down how fast the food goes in so you don’t over indulge.

Get It Naked

Salad IS good and healthy to eat, but not if you drown it in high calorie dressing. I’ve seen beautiful salads being served in restaurants, but beside them is this VAT of dressing. Of course since it’s on the plate, the diner feels obligated to use it all turning the healthy salad into a calorie-rich horror story. Instead of pouring the dressing on your salad, dip your fork or at most the bite of salad into the dressing. Dressing should be a taste enhancer not a coating!

So there you have five easy tips on losing weight. Any one of them will help you reach your weight loss goals. Each is a small, simple change that you could do and within a short amount of time would not even think about what you are missing. Combine two or more of them together to really accelerate your weight loss efforts.
