Eat less fat we are constantly told, and we'll magically lose weight and be healthier. This is an oversimplification of the issue and could actually be detrimental to anyone’s weight loss plans. Just cutting out the fat from your diet won’t help anyone accomplish their weight loss goals. There is not only fats that are bad for you, but fats that are actually good for you and vital for a healthy functioning body. Bad fats will cause diseases, higher your cholesterol and contribute to weight gain. Healthy fats, on the other hand, accomplish the opposite. They can help lower cholesterol and have positive effects on a person’s body, especially the heart and brain. There have also been some studies that show good fats to have an effect on improving your mental health.

What are good fats and bad fats?

What are healthy fats and good fats? What’s the truth about their effect on a healthy lifestyle and weight loss? Without getting too in depth, bad fats are saturated fats and trans fats. Eat too much of these and you will end up with the negative effects you’ve probably heard about, clogged arteries, heart disease, and weight gain. The good fats are polysaturated fats, monosaturated fats and omega-3’s. These fats actually improve your health, both physically and mentally. It’s also been shown that healthy fats can help in maintaining a healthy weight. So when it comes to losing the pounds and overall better health, it’s not so much cutting out fats, but lowering your bad fats and increasing the good.

Lose Weight Lead Healthier Lifestyle

If you want to lose weight and start to lead a healthier lifestyle, here are some tips to help.

  • Remember, low-fat doesn’t always mean healthy; in fact it rarely does. Many low-fat foods are high in sodium, sugar, refined carbs or calories.
  • Try replacing bad fats with good fats as much as possible. Check your food labels and try to cut out almost all processed food and fast food.
  • While you should attempt to totally rid trans fat from your diet, you should probably just lower your saturated fat intake. To lower your saturated fat try to eat more poultry or lean meats. Eating more fish is also helpful because it is full of the polysaturated fat, Omega-3. Oily type fish are the best, like tuna, salmon, sardines, and mackerel.
  • Changing dairy products from regular versions to low fat versions is another good idea; going from whole milk to 2% or 1% for example. When cooking use olive oil instead of butter.
  • Nuts are excellent sources of good fats and make tasty additions to meals, especially salads.
  • Eat more avocadoes and olives, they also make great additions to meals and in the case of olives there is a huge variety.
  • When making a salad, forget the store-bought salad dressings, instead use olive oil, flaxseed oil or even sesame oil.

Healthy fats play a huge role in helping maintain a positive mental attitude, fight fatigue and to drop unwanted pounds. The answer to a healthier lifestyle isn’t simply cutting out fat, but lowering bad fat and increasing good fat, this is what will help you on your path to a healthy weight and lifestyle.
