Green Tea Burns Fat For Faster Weight Loss

Does green tea help you lose weight? There is in fact evidence that it is one of the foods that accelerates fat burning. This doesn't mean you can eat a lot of calories, drink green tea and still expect to lose weight. It does mean that as part of a weight loss program green tea can be a big help by speeding up your metabolism and encouraging your body to burn fat.

All tea comes from the same plant Camellia Sinensis, however white and green teas are processed differently from black and oolong teas. The primary ingredient in green tea thought to provide its health benefits including fat burning are the catechins a type of polyphenol or antioxidant. Black tea also has catechins, but fewer of them because of the way it is processed.

Several studies support the idea that green tea helps with fat burning and weight loss. In a 2009 article published in the The Journal of Nutrition, the scientists studied two groups of overweight adults one of which received green tea and one of which receieved a caffeinated beverage with no catechins. For 12 weeks they exercised in moderation and kept their calorie intake constant. The results showed greater weight loss in the catechin group compared to the controls. The catechin group also enjoyed a greater percent change in abdominal fat and triglycerides. This means green tea plus exercise may help you lose fat as well as lower your triglyceride level.

A 1999 study published in the journal Obesity compared two groups of Japanese adults. One group drank green tea with 583 mg of catechins while the control group's tea had only 96 mg. They maintained their usual diet and exercise programs so in theory the only change was in drinking the tea. At the end of 12 weeks the high catechin group enjoyed higher reductions in body fat, systolic blood pressure and LDL cholesterol than did the control group. The reserachers concluded that green tea with catechins can help with fat loss as well as decrease your risk of cardiovascular disease.

If you are concerned about the caffeine in green tea the good news is that it also contains an amino acid called theanine. Research shows it has a calming effect which counterbalances caffeine but without promoting drowsiness. In ancient Japan Zen monks drank green tea to stay alert but calm during long hours of meditation. Decaf teas are also available, however they have fewer of the catechins than regular green tea. If you go this route look for teas processed with water and carbon dioxide (rather than chemicals) since that helps retain more of the catechins.

Green tea is a traditional remedy which has received much validation from contemporary research. The amount of information available suggests that it is a terrific tool for helping you to burn fat and lose weight .
