How Much Sugar In Fruits

In some popular diet plans it is okay to eat a lot of fruit. Actually, you can eat as much as you want. But what if you are advised by your doctor to cut back on your sugar intake? Then you become concerned about the amount of sugar in fruits. The old adage "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" has merit, but you need to know how much sugar is in that apple.

In most cases fruit does not have a nutrition label stuck on it. Various on line sources show differing information regarding the amount of sugar in fruits. The information can be a bit disconcerting when you see all the "ose's" listed on a chart such as sucrose, glucose, dextrose, fructose, lactose, maltose, galactose, ribose and xylose. Fructose has the highest sweet taste rating and is prevalent in most fruits. Some believe a high level of fructose is okay compared to the same level of sucrose. However, for our purpose, sugar is sugar when we need to monitor it.

Sugar is needed by our body to be used as energy. But too much sugar can upset the insulin response. This in turn can lead to the early stages of type 2 diabetes. Along with regular exercise, subscribing to a low sugar diet can usually reverse this trend. Finding the amount of sugar in packaged foods is simple enough as it is listed in grams per serving. Sugar in fruits require a lot more effort.

Anyone who has an above normal blood glucose level needs to know the sugar content of the food they eat. Also, if you do not exercise on a regular basis you need to reduce your sugar intake. But, of course, we should all exercise regularly. A daily thirty minute brisk walk is a good start. Please know that if you eat a lot of sugar your body will quickly develop a craving, which I found very difficult to overcome.

Find a good source of information about sugar in fruits and refer to it frequently to remind you of the sugar you are eating.

In all my research I found the most authoritative resource to be in publications by the United States Department of Agriculture. On first blush you can be overwhelmed by all the government input. What I preferred was a simple chart that lists just the total sugar in fruit. Not finding one I made one for myself and the family.
