Exercise, when done together with friends is easy but if you are doing it alone, it becomes a true test of self-will and discipline. The question is how far can you go?
Every now and then we hear survival stories of people who experienced extremely difficult times, but survived to tell a tale that what kept them alive is the thought of their loved ones. No one can really underestimate the power of human will. This strength can also apply to staying motivated to exercise to stay healthy and continue with it, despite all the diverse challenges. And thinking of doing this for yourself and loved ones could help a lot.
Motivation helps you develop self-discipline in exercise. And most workout sessions are now shorter and more intense but will deliver faster results. But whatever your fitness program is, the technique is pushing yourself to exert more effort and stay a little out of your comfort zone. But the problem is that millions of people struggle with being overweight. And many don’t like to exercise, until they experience health problems. Illnesses can really put you out of your comfort zone and could be a wearing battle. But it’s never too late to exercise.
Unlike in the previous century where physical activity is very much part of life, today’s generation makes it a sheer option. People are now driving on the roads (even for short distances) where others once walked. We turn on the switch and a machine will do the pushing, pulling, and lifting for us. But experts believe that despite the thrust towards weight gain, one can actually avoid a sedentary lifestyle. There are many reasons to stay healthy for the rest of your life.
Make a clear target
Being exact on your goal is better than saying to yourself that you want to lose weight. Listing the exact amount of pounds that you want to lose will help a lot because this will not only make you realize how much your excess weight is, it will also make you visualize how you will look after reaching your preferred weight. And breaking this down into specific weekly workout sessions will actually be inspiring.
Formulate a tactic
In order to lose weight you have to combine strategic exercise and complete nutrition. It won’t work if one will only exercise but continue eating a lot of junk food. Diet only without exercise has its downfall also, since you will keep a low metabolism, you will easily gain weight when you start to eat unhealthy food again.
Formulating a good tactic to help you stay motivated to exercise is really a personal approach. But let me give you one. How about hiding big clothes and displaying tight clothes that you once wore before?
Take note of your progress
Taking note of your progress is very important. This will inspire you and keep you going. Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Tell your friends about your progress and I’m sure they will appreciate it. It’s a better prize than just keeping it to yourself, right? Your friends and family are an added support in cheering you up. It’s a precious thing to hear from somebody who believes in what you are doing. This will motivate you to work out even more.
Keeping yourself motivated to exercise will give a real challenge, but staying focused on the reward ahead knowing that improving your health will benefit not only yourself but also your loved ones, will truly be inspiring. And continuing this for a lifetime will result to a healthy, strong, and capable YOU.
making a clear target and taking notes of your progress are so important. I think we are much more likely to stay motivated and focused when we have clearly defined goals...even if we make small steps towards those goals consistently. good article Lemuel
Hi Lemuel, interesting point about exercise being part of daily life in the previous century, looking back at old pictures you rarely see overweight people. Obviously changes in diet have a lot to do with that but it' s true people generally don't get as much exercise today. Thanks for the information.
Yeah, the current lifestyle is really moving towards weight gain. Sometimes I can't help but wonder if in the future people will get smaller bone density because of lack of physical activity, because it is in exercise that one can develop stronger and larger bone density, which is good for the bones, especially among women.
I'm a creature of habit. Once I develop the habit, it gets done, whatever it is. And that also means breaking old habits that don't benefit anyone. Breaking bad habits takes fortitude. The good news is that it really doesn't take a lot of time to change. You just make it part of your daily or weekly ritual. I like walking much more than working out in my home gym. Enjoy the fresh air and scenery which keeps me motivated. Thanks for this inspiring article Lemuel.
Only regime I've ever followed was when I was doing weight training, for build and stamina to do with my athletics. Had a great coach who always made sure that some one was with you, a lot easier I think when there's some on to push.
It's nice to have someone assigned to push yourself to the limit. I'm sure you've achieved your "strongest" during those trainings. I'm glad to know you were an athlete, and that you played in the nationals (that's great achievement, Rob). I think we have the same focus when you were still in your youth (and that is to test our true physical capabilities). I played also in the nationals several times (football) and is still active. Although lately I felt like I'm getting older in this game already. :)
I'm waiting for the senior Olympics when I become 80, so I better start training now. (61)
I may not admit this again, but at different times in my life I have been on a regular exercise program and even enjoyed it! It has never been about weight loss for me but I have always needed a motivation to continue. An example is needing a higher level of fitness to cope with a cycling holiday (bizarre to put those two words together!)
hehe... truthfully the holiday was a bit of a disaster. I didn't realise that where we were going was pretty much in a pit and every direction was up! My husband keeps reminding me it was my idea and in the long run we enjoyed the camping bit and back tracked for a hire car!!! lol The good part is that I rode as far as I did UP HILL because I'd been going to the gym every day beforehand!! Yes, I'm older now.... and a lot wiser! But I can still keep up with the kids to park hop! It's a fun activity to do with the bikes.
Haha... or maybe I'm just not THAT old yet!! It does help to be a sensible weight. The cardiovascular strength is not there but I'm not carrying extra! My little secret is years of running after twins and a job in a shoe shop... lots of squats! ;-) Hope all this counts in the long run?!
