How to Stay Motivated With Your Diet

Staying motivated in a new and healthy diet can be challenging at times. Some things to keep into consideration during your daily consumption of a healthy diet are to never deprive yourself; if you really want something bad enough (that might not necessarily qualify as diet food) do not ever deny yourself. Have it – within a substantial proportion size. But remember - there is no feeling guilty! Feeling shameful will trigger emotional eating that will not help you stay on track. Always designate a quantity of calories that allows you to have that chocolate snack, or whatever it is - each day that you might need to stay on track. An excellent way to help you stay on track is use the nutrition tracker at SparkPeople that is free.

To help stay motivated with your diet eating a significant amount of protein at each meal it extremely vital - especially at breakfast. There is no better way to start your day than with healthy protein and healthy carbohydrates that contain whole grains. You need some carbohydrates for energy – especially if you have a strong workout regimen. You want to make sure your protein outweighs your carbohydrates throughout the day and you also want to make sure you are getting your 6 servings of fruits and vegetables throughout daily. Try to eat 4-6 small meals a day to keep from getting ravenous, which can later on lead to overindulgence.

Keep your snacks full of protein with a vegetable or a fruit. The best foods to fill you up and give you energy are your healthy proteins – lean chicken and fish as well as your dark leafy greens. Most importantly make sure you are drinking 6 glasses of water a day, preferably 68 oz. or more water will help keep you fuller, give you more energy and it will wash away the toxins from our bodies.

Good support is another key factor in staying motivated on a healthy diet. Your family needs to help you by believing in you and encouraging you. Try to get a family member to workout with you! Show your children how important it is to eat healthy and how great it feels to exercise and stay fit. Feed your family the necessary vitamins and nutrients for their bodies to stay strong and healthy. Also try a diet/workout buddy! Exchange your food diary at the end of the day and share tips and healthy recipes. Waking up each day knowing that you have someone other than yourself to answer to will also provide motivation & support.

There are plenty of free weight-loss groups online for mental support, inspiration and motivation – search Facebook for some great groups. These will help you stay motivated with your diet. One such group that I have found tremendously helpful is SparkPeople. They have a free nutrition tracker that helps with keeping track of what you eat during the course of the day, and even tells you your carbohydrate, protein and fat intake as well as your caloric intake. It sets a personal limit to your calories based on what you give it for your height and weight. A fitness tracker is also there, along with many other great tools that are free.

It is a great community. There is nothing better than to vent, discuss obstacles, trials & tribulations and also log your daily food & workout diary with others. Being a part of a weight-loss or health group can supplement your motivation because you have more than just you to answer to each day; you are aiding & encouraging others doing the same thing as you.

Staying hydrated is another key factor in sticking to a great healthy diet. Most importantly make sure you are drinking 6 glasses of water a day, preferably 68 oz. or more water will help keep you fuller, give you more energy. It has been said that water will wash away the toxins from our bodies, as well as act as a natural diuretic and speed metabolism. There are some experts that believe as long as the fluids you consume do not contain calories, than it does not matter which fluids you ingest. Sometimes you may feel like you are hungry – try drinking a glass of water first and then see if you were really just thirsty. Most of the time people confuse dehydration with being hungry.

Staying motivated is all about being in the right mindset; stay confident, do things to help you stay inspired and you will be on your way to the best health of your life!

Sticking with a healthy diet and eating 4-6 times a day, staying hydrated and having a good support system will steer you in the right direction to your weight loss goal. These three factors and a good amount of physical exercise will have you back to the weight you desire in no time, and if done right you will keep it off, permanently, because of the slow and natural way in which you lost the weight.
