Many ways to increase metabolism exist that can help your body naturally burn more calories after working out or through everyday physical activity. Special steps can be taken to ensure your metabolism is operating at top efficiency throughout your day. In addition, taking certain steps after a vigorous cardio workout can keep your metabolism at top efficiency for hours, even days, after your routine is finished.

The following a list of ways to increase metabolism:

· Determine the factors that are slowing your metabolism. A variety of factors can cause your metabolism to operate at less than peak efficiency. They include:

1. Age: Your metabolism will decrease by five percent every decade past the age of 40.

2. Gender: Men tend to burn calories at a faster rate than women.

3. Heredity: You can inherit your metabolic rate, slow or fast.

4. Thyroid: Disorders of the thyroid can cause metabolism to slow.

5. Proportion of muscle mass: The higher your muscle mass, the faster you burn calories.

Taking these factors into account will help you determine how much attention you must pay to your metabolism. If you must conquer an inherited low metabolic rate, fight the effects of aging, or begin to build muscle mass, you will know to take additional steps to keep your metabolism as high as possible.

* Eat small, frequent meals: Eating five small meals of five hundred calories or less throughout the day will result in a higher metabolism.

* Zigzag Calories: If your diet plan requires you to consume 2,000 calories per day, you should consider eating 1,800 calories one day and 2,200 the next on regular basis. This tricks your body into maintaining optimum metabolic levels at all times.

* Drink Water: Lacking water causes your body to hoard calories rather than burn them. Drinking water after a workout and throughout the day gives your body the fluids necessary to burn calories at a faster rate.

* Calculate your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) and plan accordingly: Several online calculators can help to determine how many calories your body burns naturally throughout the day. Once you have determined your BMR, you can adjust your diet accordingly. You should always eat the same number of calories as the level of your BMR in order to lose weight safely and to ensure your metabolism operates at peak efficiency

* Eat Breakfast: As you sleep, your body slows your metabolism in order to ensure the food you eat before you rest is sufficient to maintain bodily functions. Once you awake, eating something as soon as possible will boost your metabolism and help it to stay at a high level.

* Weight training: Using weights after a cardiovascular workout will improve your metabolic efficiency and ensure you burn as many calories as possible after your workout. In addition, it will build muscle mass, an important factor in boosting your metabolism.

* The preceding ways to increase metabolism should help you with your weight loss goals and optimize your success with physical fitness.
