Let Them Eat Lettuce

In the time of Marie Antoinette she sat in her Palace and said of the French Peasants when they couldn’t afford to buy bread “Let them eat cake”.

Today we have diet and exercise ‘experts’ sitting in their ivory towers telling the whole world that if you are overweight, obese or morbidly obese “eat less and exercise more”. In effect ‘Let them eat lettuce’

You would think they had discovered the secret of eternal youth. They have probably never had a weight problem in their lives. Why can’t they tell us something we don’t know?

Well there is something they don’t know and that is that the advice they are giving is probably good for about 90% of the world population but not for the forgotten 10% who may well have conditions that prevents them from losing weight.

I should know, I suffered for 15 years wondering why I just could not lose weight.

I’d been to my GP, I’d seen Dieticians, My Thyroid Function has been tested and I’d tried food intolerance tests. I’d been told:- I have irritable Bowel Syndrome, I eat too much of the wrong foods, I don’t exercise enough and I drink too much!

I’d tried sensible diets, I’d tried crash diets, I’d been to slimming clubs and I joined the Gym.

If this all this sound just too familiar, read on to find out more, I really do sympathise with you all because I know first-hand what it’s like to not be able to lose weight. I have to admit I’d only been 3 stone over weight but that was enough for me.

I went back and forth between Doctors, Dieticians and Consultants. The question I kept asking was. “Why Can’t I lose weight?”

I had more diagnostic tests than I can remember and the best they could come up with were the answers above. I knew in my heart that there was much more to my problem than over-eating or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I was about 3 stone over-weight but it just would not budge.

Finally after a week in hospital undergoing countless procedures including:- an endoscopy, a colonoscopy, a barium meal, a barium enema (I won’t go into the gory details but if you don’t know of these procedures you can Google them), scans of my tummy, X-rays, blood tests and ending with a full body CT scan,

My Consultant told me he knew what the problem was. He explained that it was a very rare condition and Doctors just don’t look for it when they are diagnosing patients. He went on to say that there were several symptoms but the one that interested me was the one that made it impossible to lose weight. Now for the first time in years I finally knew why I couldn’t lose weight”

You need to know if you might have this condition and if so you will need to know what to say to your Doctor next time you ask for help to lose weight.

DO NOT believe the old adage ‘You are what you eat’

This may be true of the majority if the population but not true for everyone. You need to know if there is a medical condition preventing you from losing weight. Don't just keep asking why can't I lose weight? do something about it.
