Let's face facts, Fitness is something most of us could use more of (I know I could). We try to eat right and exercise, but a lot of us find other things more interesting to do with our time. Notice the word "Interesting" in the last sentence? I can't speak for everyone, but my experience has been, most exercises are so repetitious, they become boring and hard to do. Motivation is another issue, sculpting a perfect body takes a lot of time and the results can take months or even years. With the "fast food society" we live in, attention spans are shorter than ever before, we require results in hours or days, not months or years. To quote Veruca Salt: "I want it now!"
So you ask "what is it you are trying to say?" It is simple, exercise around something that excites you. For me, it is golf. It might be bowling, cooking or something else all together, that excites you. What ever it is, with a little imagination, you can create an exercise routine out of just about anything. And more Importantly, you can focus on measurable results in days.
I will give you an example. I find jogging around my neighborhood about as boring as the waiting room at my dentist office. Nothing new to see and to be honest, my neighbors aren't the most encouraging when it comes to getting in shape. (most will invite you in for a beer or a glass of wine if your jogging by) Golf, on the other hand, isn't the most athletic of sports, but you can definitely benefit from athleticism and flexibility.
So, make your weekly round of golf about fun, health and measurable goals. Instead of taking a cart for 18 holes, walk the first 9 holes and then get a cart. When you do, that is a 2 hour walk that equals 3+ miles. During the week you can do several golf exercises for flexibility like stretches that emulate your golf swing. 5-10 minutes a night is all it takes to see results the following weekend. Results like, a couple more yards on your drives, more height on your irons or even more spin on your wedges. These can be very effective motivators if you take the time to notice them. I know my golf buddies noticed it when I started. They weren't winning all the greenies and closest to the hole contests anymore.
You can do this with all sorts of activities. Cooking for example, It would seem counter productive that you could turn the preparation of fatty foods into an exercise routine to motivate you. Just pretend that each vegetable that is in the recipe has to be picked or harvested. For each tomato in your pizza sauce, do a berry picker for each one. (a berry picker is an exercise where you stand with your legs spread far apart and you try to touch ground with both hands in front of you then directly below you and then behind you so that it looks like your picking berries off the ground) If the recipe calls for onions, grab a can of beans out of the pantry and pick it up off the floor with each hand like your picking fresh onions. If the recipe calls for milk or cream, do 5 squats while pretending to milk the cow for every cup used. Be creative, there are thousands of things you can create exercises from.
You may feel a little silly at first, but the benefit is you burn calories before you consume them and your family will only make fun of you the first few times you do them.
So no more excuses, get out there and find an exercise that excites you and help yourself get a little more active each day. Your heart with thank you for it.
