Menopause Weight Gain-5 Diet Tips for Women

In addition to the other unpleasant symptoms of menopause (hot flashes, night sweats, moodiness etc.), many women also experience weight gain. The diet requirements for a menopausal woman are special. So, special care must be taken when choosing a diet plan to follow. In this article I'm going to discuss what to look for in order to fight that dreaded menopause weight gain.

Keep it Healthy

Look for a diet plan that includes whole grains such as whole wheat and brown rice. These are considered the good "carbs". Since your body processes (metabolizes) them at a much slower rate, whole grains will help you lose pounds and belly fat. Other examples of good "carbs" include vegetables, beans and some fruits. Did you know that brown rice and black beans can also help reduce hot flashes?

Watch the Fruit

Everyone's heard that fruit is healthy, but all fruits are not created equal. Some fruits such as bananas, pineapple and watermelon have a high level of natural sugar in them. Not good for weight loss! Even though it's been said that pineapple can help reduce hot flashes, a better bet would be grapefruit, strawberries or apples.

Go for Variety

If you're experiencing depression or moodiness, the last thing you want to do is try sticking to a boring, restrictive diet. A diet that is too restrictive is also hard to stick with in the long run. Make sure the plan you choose includes a variety of different foods and allows for some type of dessert (including chocolate). After all, we all need a treat once in a while!

Work it Out

Any diet plan will produce faster results if some type of exercise is included. In addition to weight loss, exercise has been proven to reduce many of the symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, moodiness and depression. The key is finding something you enjoy. Walking, swimming, bicycling, yoga and all kinds of gym exercises are just a few. Even parking your car farther back in the lot when running errands helps. It's all good!

Sleep Tight

Let's talk about getting a good nights sleep. Did you know that loss of sleep causes weight gain? Being sleep deprived leads to stress and increases the cortisol levels in your body. And, this in turn results in weight gain and belly fat. Some women in menopause experience the common night sweats and hot flashes, which make a good nights sleep tough. Taking melatonin has helped some women get a better nights rest. In fact, some over-the-counter "hot flash remedies" include melatonin.

These are my 5 top diet tips for women undergoing menopause. The best diet plan will not only help you lose weight but have the added advantage of helping you cope with the common menopause complaints.
