Menopause very often goes with menopause weight gain. There two main reasons for the weight gain: physical and psychological causes.
Concerning the physical causes, most of the time the weight gain is due to hormonal imbalance. One of the main hormones related to weight that starts declining is estrogen. It becomes more difficult to lose fat in menopause, because as a response to the declining level of estrogen, the body responds by holding onto fat cells since that hormone is stored in fat.
Androgen, another hormone, increases at menopause and is responsible for your putting weight on your stomach.
Your metabolism slows down as you age. Since a high metabolism helps you burn fight, with the loss of muscle mass, you tend to put on weight. That's why it's recommended to do strength and resistance exercises in order to maintain or increase your muscle mass.
The other reason for menopause weight gain as to do with psychological causes. Anxiety, overwork, and fatigue can cause weight gain as they can lead to hormonal imbalance. Also when we are anxious or tired we tend to reach for comfort foods which are foods that usually high in fats and sugars.
What can be done then to control menopause weight gain?
First of course, you should make every efforts to take care of yourself and de-stress.One of the great effects of regular exercises is improved mood ans tress relief. Yoga is a great type of exercise to ease your stress and calm your mind and emotions.
You should modify your diet. As we grow older, it becomes important to control our portion sizes as we do not need to eat as much as we did when we were younger.
Refined foods such as those made with white flour should be eliminated. However, you should eat more of the healthy fats, particularly omega3 and omega6 fatty acids, the unsaturated fats, which can be found in olive oil and flaxseed oil as well as in fish like salmon, tuna and herring. Unsaturated fats are the fats that say liquid at room temperature. Saturated fats such as the ones find it lard, margerine are usually solid at room temperature.
Finally, the reason why the healthy fats are so important is because the body cannot produce fat on its own so it must come from the food you eat. In addition, healthy fats are needed for hormones and for healthy cell reproduction.
So modifications in your diet are the simplest way to fight and control menopause weight gain.
