Motorhater Nation: Are Haters Really Motivators And Can They Make You A Weight Loss Success?

After Pinterest announced that it would seriously limit some of the "thinspo" boards, unmotivated or overly motivated people alike wondered where they would get their next dose of fortitude to power through a long workout or to to bypass the last doughnut in the box. But, there might be an answer and it might be closer than you think: some people are claiming that hateful sounding catch phrases and demonizing self talk are really inspirational. No, make that motivational. The phrase "haters are motivators" has been mentioned more than a few times and may very well catch on. We can call the speech "motor-hational". We won't cheer people on any more, we will motorhate them into self loathing themselves into fitness. That's bound to work, right?

Psychologically speaking, the glaring answer is no. In study after study, survey after survey, the overwhelming answer is that this kind of fat shaming does not work in the long term. Sure, someone says something terrible about your weight, or you look in the mirror and moo at yourself until you feel like an abject failure. You get up from the sofa and you hit the gym, hard. You try to monitor every single bite of food in your mouth, staring daggers at others as they mindlessly chew a tasty, juicy burger while you plow through yet another bland and boring salad. That's going to be the key to your success, for sure, this time. Except, it's not. That kind of self deprecating talk coupled with the intense change in physical activity plus the abrupt change in the ill conceived diet plan is the trifecta for failure waiting to happen. You might lose a few pounds but you will stop- for one reason or another and the weight will come roaring back on.

Trainers who try to motorhate people into shape are no better than the people who oink as you pass by. In fact, they are worse because you are paying them to do it. Even in the most serious case of a person who needs guidance and discipline, the finger pointing, name calling, shame game is not going to be effective. It is not just what you are hearing from external sources. It is what you are hearing from yourself that will make the difference. You can't use the hate speech to get yourself back into shape. You can't hide behind platitudes and acceptance either. What you need are the right inspirational phrases, a sensible but balanced eating plan and the right kind of safe, effective exercise and the understanding that it is a journey, not a destination.

You will falter along the way. You will eat a doughnut from time to time. But, you go on from that and you do better for the rest of the day. Once you learn that you are a work in progress and accept that revisions are normal and expected, you will find success.
