In June of 1987 my daughter was born. She was tiny and cute. She smiled a lot. when she was 8 months old she developed asthma. This condition started out small and we thought that she would grow out of it as she got older. the asthma got worst. She was having attacks about twice a month. The doctors were having trouble adjusting her medications. We decided to go to a specialist. The doctor conducted test and came up with a conbination of medicines that finally helped to get her asthma under control.
We were told about the side effects of one of her medicines which was a steroid. The side effect was weight gain. At the time weight gain was not a problem for us. All that mattered was her asthma was under control and we could relax a little and enjoy life. After 4 years she was 20 pounds overweight. When she started school she was the largest kid in her class. She would get teased a little but it did not bother her. She was very smart. She was so smart that she tested out of kintergarden and move right into first grade.
A few years later when she was in the 4th grade the kids started teasing her more and more. She was close to 35 pounds overweight. We were a little concerned and asked her doctor to help us with the weight issue. The doctor took her off of the steriods and within a month her asthma attacks returned. Her doctor put her back on the steriods and she continued to gain weight. By the time she reached the 6th grade she was 53 pounds overweight. She was still getting teased but she was very smart and intelligent. She found a way to deal with people teasing her about her weight. She was tested in school and found to be at the genius level. She skipped the 7th and eight grades and went streight to high school.
She was so big that no one noticed how young she was in high school. She had just became 12 years old and in her second year in high school when she started to notice boys. She also had a few girl friend who were also overweight. She came to me and asked why she was so fat. I told her it was a side effect of the steriods she was taking to control her asthma. She told me that she liked this boy but he would not have anthing to do with a fat girl. I told her she should not worry about boys who judge you because of your appearence. I also told her to try and make friends with boys and keep it at that level. Sooner or later a boy will come around a see you for the person that you are and not your appearance.
Two months into her 2nd year of high school she took a college entrance exam and passed with a perfect score. Now she was going to high school during the day and college at night. She continued to gain weight. When she turned 18 years old she grauated from high school and college. Now she was 150 pounds overweight. We went to the doctor where she received a full check up. The doctor stated that she no longer needed the steriods and that her asthma condition was gone. We were all very happy for her and now she wants to know how she can lose all of her weight and be like normal weight girls.
We asked the doctor how she would be able to lose the fat. The doctor told us that she needs a good diet plan to lose weight slowly. So we searched the internet looking for a good weight loss diet that would help her get started. She tried 6 different diets none worked. She went to a weight loss specialist who did some test and found out why the diets she tried in the past did not work. The weight loss specialist told her that she needed a plan that would focus 80% diet and 20% workout.
He recommended a weight loss program and after a few months on that program she is now showing signs of losing weight. She is now happy that things are starting to change in her life. It will take some time for her to reach her weight loss goals but we are all there for her and i am sure she will get there. All of this has started me thinking if my daughter tried 6 different diets and none worked, what is the best diet to lose weight? I guess when we find out the answer Americans will also start to get smaller to.
Maybe the solution is not a diet, but just normal healthy food in smaller portions? Good luck to your daughter, I am sure she will succeed
