My Weight Loss Journey

Who hasn’t had the experience of getting ready for a party, date or just going to work only to discover when putting on those clothes you had in mind to wear, they just won’t fit comfortably anymore! Well that happened to me recently, in fact that is happening to me all too often. How embarrassing it was when I asked my boyfriend to zip me up in my party dress and found that he couldn’t. Out came the trusty jeans and blouse again for that evening. So beings my weight loss journey.

I have always been active and so pretty much have been able eat reasonably well and still maintain my figure but over the last few years I haven’t been as active as times gone by and wouldn’t you know it the middle age spread isn’t so much of a myth anymore.

One of the hardest things was to actually admit that perhaps, just maybe I could afford to shed a few kilos *groans* I have found through talking with my friends that on average what most people have as a weight loss goal is not really that huge. It is the same for me. However it’s not so much the specific weight loss amount but body appearance and muscle tone improvement that we desire. This is what we see in the mirror every day and what other people see and also what helps us ladies fit well into that dress again!

I truly believe habits are what direct us to making the choices we make and it’s no different when it comes to being active and healthy. When I am in the habit of eating well and exercising regularly my body responds accordingly. Habits can be upgraded or replaced by our will power. This may sound farfetched for some of you, but will power is simply having a big enough reason to make a different choice other than the one our ‘poor’ habits currently keep making for us.

For me, my big reason is to stop the disappointing moments when looking through my wardrobe at all the great clothes I can no longer fit into! In order to successfully change my habits I need to take a well-rounded lifestyle approach that incorporates:

  1. At least 30 minutes of physical activity (cardio or weight training) 3 to 4 times per week
  2. Have regular but smaller meal sizes (i.e. eating smaller portioned breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner helps to maintain a good metabolism)
  3. Eating foods like fruits, vegetables nut, proteins, irons
  4. Remembering its a daily journey to keep a strong focused attitude and not something that will happen overnight

So I have just purchased my treadmill and organised a weight and diet program that over the next 12 weeks will see me reach my goal. I figure if I keep it simple and easy I will stick to it!

Your stories, comments and feedback always welcome.

Sounds like you have a very sensible attitude. Diets don't work but a healthy lifestyle change always does. I have never worried about my weight either and this last year when, for health reasons, I changed what I was eating I had 6kg slip off me. I must admit I felt great about myself and loved wearing my skirts that dangled off my hips! ;-) Being a good weight is not only physically healthy but also emotionally helpful. Good luck with it all!
