Obesity A Condition Of Note

Obesity is an important condition to note since it affects the general state of health world-wide and poses a serious financial and human resource burden in most systems. This condition has increased markedly in the past few years, this suggests that there is an urgent need to stop it. The rate at which obesity grows is alarming, diet and lifestyle are to blame in most instances when dealing with obesity though genetics can play a role on other cases. The cost of managing this condition and all other related problems runs in millions of rands each year and products as well as systems to deal with it also in the same range of costs.

The body mass index is the tool used to express or measure obesity and is a calculation using the mass and height of an individual. Stored body fat in excess of what is acceptable defines this condition and it is from this extra fat that problems associated with it stem. There is a difference between the BMI of men and that of women because of the expected variation in body fat. Body fat composition can also be calculated using scientific formulas almost accurately when determining obesity extent. The BMI may also be higher in persons who have high muscle bulk and in no way does that mean they are not healthy, so it serves as tool to express deviation from a healthy weight bracket.

BMI for healthy men is around 15 to 20% and for women 25 to 30%, whereas healthy body fat content for men is 25% and less, for women body fat content of 33% and above considered as obesity. Waist and hip size is another method of establishing obesity extent and is easier to get with just a tape measure around the waist or the hips. A size of 36 inches in women and 40 inches in men are signs of the imminent approach of conditions associated with obesity. These conditions have now increased proving their association with obesity, they include problems such as high cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, heart diseases, stroke, infertility some cancers and breathing problems and more.

Association of obesity with illness lead to development of interest in dealing with this pandemic from many centers of all communities, meaning that everyone be involved in dealing with it and give the necessary support. Regular checkups necessary for obesity exclusion are important and mandatory. A healthy lifestyle which involves proper diets and physical exercise is a change that is-life saving for all.
