Pure Protein Soups Can Help With Weight Loss

As a follower of The Dukan Diet and author of The Gourmet Dieter, I spend most of my days finding interesting recipes suitable for high protein, low carbohydrate diet plans. Often the problem with such diets is the lack of interesting food you can eat, this leads to boredom and then inevitably failure. The Dukan Diet is a great plan, if you can stick to it. The most difficult days, being those where you can only eat a menu of pure protein foods. Most dieters following the plan chomp through large amounts of grilled meat, which does fill you up, but does nothing on the satisfaction front. But followers of The Dukan Diet will be pleased to know that I have found some fantastic recipes for pure protein soups. Yes, you heard correctly, soups! These are not the hearty vegetable variety, which you are probably craving if you are on a pure protein day, but delicious all the same. These soups are of the Asian variety. So, wonderfully spicy broths, full of soft, delicately poached, meat or fish. My personal favourite is so easy and simple to make, I wanted to share it with you today.

Simple Fish Soup

Serves 4

6 cups good quality fish stock 400g firm white fish fillets, cut on the diagonal into 1cm slices

1 tbs ginger, julienne

1 tbs light soy sauce

1 tsp sugar alternative/ artificial sweetener

1/2 cup coriander leaves

1/3 cup spring onions (scallions) finely sliced

1. Bring the stock to the boil in a large heavy based pot. Add soy sauce, ginger and sugar and stir to combine.

2. Reduce heat, add fish and simmer gently for 3 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through.

3. Stir through the coriander and spring onions, leaving a little for garnish.

4. Serve in bowls garnished with coriander and spring onions.

Cooking Tips Fish that work well in this soup include cod, flathead, snapper, ling, perch, bream, halibut and sea bass. This recipe alos works well with chicken. Simply finely slice a chicken breast and add to the broth, and simmer until cooked through. When choosing an artificial sweetener or sugar alternative, make sure that is it suitable for cooking. You always need to check on the packet how much to use. Some are the same as sugar measure for measure but NOT weight for weight.
