Staying Motivated

Keeping your motivation level high is one of the toughest parts of losing weight and getting in shape. Let's face it, it's rather depressing when you've been "good" all week and followed your eating plan as well as hitting all your scheduled workouts but the scale doesn't budge... or it moves just a little - we all want to see exceptional results from our efforts, and we want to see them quickly! Weight loss is typically a lengthy process though, especially if you want to lose the weight and keep it off. So, how do you stay motivated to stick with your plan and reach your weight loss goals? Let's take a look at a few different ways to remain motivated and accountable... and maybe even excited about working out!

Always set goals - you have to have something to work towards. The key here is to decide what you want to achieve with your new diet/exercise plan and then break that end goal down into smaller, more manageable goals... kind of like stepping stones along the path to weight loss success! It's a whole lot easier to get motivated and remain that way if you are consistently hitting realistic, smaller goals that you are setting each week than it is to just focus on the end result (which usually seems so far off and out of reach!).

Find yourself a workout buddy... or even two or three! It's always more fun to exercise with someone else, and it holds you more accountable as well. Not only does having a buddy help ensure that you make your planned workouts, but you guys can trade recipes and tips, making the whole weight loss process a little more enjoyable and a lot less daunting. A little friendly rivalry goes a long way towards motivation as well - who doesn't want to be the "biggest loser" of the group each week?!!

If you can't find anyone to exercise with and share your weight loss journey, consider joining an online support group. There are a lot of different ones out there that offer loads of great information, as well as online communities that are very supportive no matter what your goals are. You can create a profile, track your meals and workouts, interact with other members of the community, share progress photos and even blog! It's a really fun way to stay motivated as far as diet and exercise and you can find many that are free to join. There are many sites to choose from, so do some research, find which one best suits you and join in!

Treat yourself! At the end of each week, if you've stuck to your diet and exercise plan, treat yourself with a "cheat" day. There's nothing like feeling totally gross and nasty after eating bad food all day long to motivate you to eat "clean" again next week! My cheat days became one cheat meal per week very quickly because I just hated that full, bloated feeling from eating junk after I'd been eating well all week. I learned really quickly that I wasn't missing out on anything by not eating junk, and feeling great from eating well and exercising motivates me to keep it up week after week!

There are lots of ways to keep motivated when you're trying to lose weight and get into shape. As we already discussed, manageable goals are important and having buddies to share with makes it more fun. The biggest motivation of all though is to do it because you want it for yourself - not because someone else wants it for you or says you should, but because you want to feel great and look your best! Attitude is everything so believe in yourself - work hard, eat well and stay motivated!
