The Truth About Why We Store Body Fat And What Can Be Done

In my profession as a Personal Trainer I have people tell me on a daily basis that they 'want to lose weight'. I have begun answering them with a question... "do you want to lose weight or do you want to lose body fat?" I put this question to the last 20 people I had meet for a health and fitness consultation and 19 of the 20 decided that in fact, if they reduced their body fat, their weight would not really be a concern.

The difference unfortunately is that losing body fat is not quite as straight forward as losing excess body weight. You have to focus more on the smaller details and look at the process as a long term journey rather than a quick fix. The benefit however is that by dropping body fat, your appearance improves drastically (when done correctly) unfortunately in our age of fad diets and calorie counting snack foods this cant be said of weight loss, again I see people who have dropped 10lbs of bodyweight but their body fat has remained exactly the same, and... sadly for them, they have looked worse for it.

In this next paragraph I am going to bore you a little with a bit of science. I want to talk about a hormone called Insulin. Insulin is the bodies fat storing hormone, and when Insulin levels rise (I will come to what makes our insulin levels rise and fall in a moment) we store fat in our adipose tissue (loose connective tissue between the skin and muscle) and equally, when our insulin levels fall, our fat stores in our adipose tissue becomes mobile and we use it as an energy source... ultimately 'burning fat!' so, in a nutshell, high levels of insulin cause us to store fat, and low levels cause us to use fat as an energy source and 'burn it'... with me so far? Great!

So the next question is obviously what causes our insulin levels to rise and fall? Well...everything you put in your mouth has an effect, whether it is your hormones, concentration, energy levels, immune system, weight management, sleep, mood, menstrual cycle, ageing ability to fight diseases such as cancer, tumours and the list goes on and on. Some of the worst foods are ironically being advised by government nutrition consultants and medical professionals as part of our rda (recommended daily allowance) And as a result of this, foods like saturated fats, cholesterol and red meat have received extremely bad press for decades. What we should be cutting out are 'white' and 'processed' carbohydrates and sugars, vegetable oils, 'reduced fat' foods and basically anything manufactured.

The theory is that our genetics evolve through history and past habits.. our ancestors basically. So the rule being, if they didn't eat it, neither should we. That includes a wide selection of animal foods (poultry, beef, fish, shellfish, pork, lamb etc.) attached is a food pyramid which should explain things in more detail.

I hope this has been 'food' for thought for you (sorry...awful pun I know!)

Elliot
