Tea is the second most popular beverage in the world losing out only to water. Known for its weight loss benefits, tea can be comforting as well as stimulating, something to enjoy when you want to get away from it all or something to share with others. While green tea may have received the most press with regard to weight loss, it is not the only one that can claim success in this arena. Several herbal teas are delicious to drink and also can help you shed a few pounds. If drinking tea for weight loss hasn't occurred to you, give it a try. You may be surprised.

If you were to visit weight loss centers in Asia you would find that gynostemma tea is a popular choice. A member of the cucumber family, gynostemma, or jiaogulan, grows wild in southern China where it is known as a miracle or longevity herb. It is actually an adaptogen, one of those herbs which brings balance to your body and as such has a broad impact affecting all of your organs and systems.

Gynostemma has what is known as double action helping your body obtain what it needs. So for example, if you are too thin, it will help you gain just enough weight to be healthy, whereas if you are overweight it will help you lose your extra pounds. According to a gynostemma website, it works in part by assisting your body to maintain healthy blood sugar and reduce blood fats. It is also a cleansing herb removing toxins that may cause inflammation and fat retention. Gynostemma has a pleasant slightly sweet taste which you can enjoy either hot or cold.

Choosing ginger tea for weight loss is another good idea. Not only does it taste good but it may help speed up your weight loss program. Scientist L.K. Han in Japan found that ginger prevented weight gain in mice fed a high fat diet. In another study mice who received ginger lost weight. M. Westerterp-Plantenga a scientist at Maastricht University in the Netherlands suggests that ginger is one of several different foods that can speed up your metabolism and help burn fat. Known primarily as a digestive aid, ginger has been used for centuries by traditional healers.

You may be familiar with chamomile tea as something you drink in the evening as a sleep aid. However, recent studies have found chamomile can also help regulate blood sugar. The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center reports that chamomile is anti-hyperglycemic, which means it helps reduce blood sugar. Japanese studies have found it also helps block an enzyme which promotes complications caused by diabetes. Be careful of chamomile if you are allergic to ragweed since they come from the same family.
