In this article, I`m going to explain how to effectively use HIIT cardio for weight loss. HIIT stands for high intensity interval training. It consists of intervals of intense exercise separated by periods of low to no intensity. Many would argue that it is the best method out there for burning off excess body fat and I would agree with them!
The most common use of HIIT would be sprinting. To sprint, you can either measure intervals by time or distance. Distance would be better because time can cause you to put in less effort. Visualization is key here. Your body will fight you so you have to fight back until you make time. It is ok if you slow down a bit when you have reached your absolute limit and still have a couple seconds, however.
The best interval training in my opinion would be boxing and shadowboxing. You simply do intervals naturally in the form of rounds. It is extremely taxing and will leave you feeling like you got hit by a bus by the end of it. But, how many fat boxers do you know?
For volume, try to stick to 5-10 intervals at max intensity. Doing any more would become redundant as this is a type of anaerobic exercise and that system takes a good deal of time to recover. If you like, finish off with 10 minutes of jogging but not much more than that; overdoing it will cause your body to burn off not just fat but muscle. Muscle is your friend when it comes to fat loss, it burns calories just by being there.
2 to 3 times a week is plenty when it comes to HIIT. Doing any more than this can have adverse affects as your body hasn`t yet fully recuperated for the previous workout. This can lead to bad results as well as overuse injures. Also, don`t eat before or directly after these sessions. The insulin does not react well with a body loaded with cortisol. The two react to create an environment where the body actually wants to store fat!
HIIT is my go to exercise for losing weight. Even when I don`t feel like I`m carrying an extra pound, I like to do a session here and there to give my system a pleasant shock. I hope this article has helped you understand and implement the awesome fat burning power of high intensity interval training! Best of luck!
