Weight Gain And Cancer

First, it was the cancer shock. Now, your weight is heading to obesity. The starting point to gaining back your self-esteem is to understand why this is happening. In the course of cancer treatment, most people lose weight. In few instances, others may slightly increase in weight. This is not a cause for alarm. It however becomes a concern when one gains significant weight. This is because it not only affects the treatment, but also their overall health.

Weight gain in breast cancer is the most recorded. More than half of those undergoing treatment will experience weight gain. And the risks involved in this change are severe health complications including diabetes and high blood pressure. For one to take charge of the situation, you need to understand the major causes of this weight gain.

  • Chemotherapy

During this treatment, the body retains excess fluids in the tissues and cells. One also reduces physical activity as the treatment causes fatigue, increased hunger and food cravings. It also reduces metabolism. In some women, it triggers the onset of menopause and thereby decreases metabolism. In such a situation, weight gain is possible.

  • Hormone therapy

This is especially for cancers that affect the reproductive system in both men and women. This medication works by decreasing estrogen and progesterone in women and testosterone in men. The result is an increase in body mass (from fat) and a decrease in body mass (from muscle). It also decreases metabolism and hence weight gain.

  • Steroids

In cancer treatment, medics use steroids to reduce swelling, pain and inflammation. These medications may increase fatty tissue and result in large abdomen. The neck or face may also appear fuller than before. When steroids are continuously taken over long periods of time, weight gain occurs.

If you have cancer and have had any of the above treatments, then you now understand the sudden weight gain. All hope is not lost. There are ways to manage your weight as you gain back your self-esteem. Talk to your doctor on any symptoms you experience in the course of your treatment. Additionally, consult a diet expert before you change your diet. As you do that, consider taking the following:

  1. Fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains in plenty
  2. Plenty of water
  3. Cut on fat, sugar and refined flour intake
  4. Cut on habits that cause inactivity and overeating
  5. Use such cooking methods as steaming as opposed to frying
  6. Build on exercises in everyday activities such as walking
  7. Lower salt intake in your diet

At this point, you have nothing to worry about. You realize that you can indeed manage your weight and live a normal life even with cancer.
