Weight Loss Confusion

Healthy Lifestyle

Weight loss is a big deal for many people. It's not all six pack abs and buns of steel, for some people it's literally a life or death dilemma. Being obese can be deadly; plain and simple. Heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes, being overweight has serious consequences. It also effects the everyday enjoyment of life's events and relationships. An overweight person can also have mental health issues like depression.

Whether you're trying to lose weight strictly for health reasons or just to look better, one thing will be the same; you will be bombarded with thousands of diets and fitness gimmicks. This chaos of ads and information can leave most people feeling a little lost. Who can blame them? The weight loss industry is worth billions of dollars and there are thousands of offerings available for every level and attitude.

You need to cut through the clutter and get a clearer look at what you really need. Keep things simple and follow some basic rules, at least in the beginning.

Get in the right frame of mind by assessing exactly what being overweight is doing to your life. List everything detrimental, big and small. From serious health problems to being self-conscious in a bathing suit, everything counts. Honestly evaluate not only your abilities and aptitude, but what you have available in your community and in your price range.

A few more tips:

Forget dieting, you need to develop long term healthy eating habits.

Look past the hype and glitz and find a solid, reputable program.

If going the gym route, take a free tour and see the equipment, but also the classes they offer that might fit your schedule and needs.

Involve friends and family, support and the occasional kick in the butt are invaluable.

Check out the more reputable fitness and health programs, the better ones are worth the money and afford you the opportunity to move at your own pace and have privacy.

One of the most important things to remember, especially at the start of a healthier lifestyle plan, is to keep it simple and follow the basic steps. Don't overwhelm yourself with too much information and unrealistic goals.

Stress can be the cause of weight gain, so don't make stressing out over your weight loss plan the cause of more weight gain.

Keep your feet pointed in the right direction and keep moving. Block out the negativity from the naysayers. Once you get more comfortable and confident with a healthier lifestyle, you might want to re-evaluate your program. It may be a positive idea to start adding to your plan in various ways that you find enjoyable and interesting. Lose the extra pounds and you will be healthier, look better and feel great.

I wish we could strike the word "diet" from the weight loss dictionary. Diet is a noun not a verb. Once we realize this, we can start thinking in terms of an all around approach to healthy weight maintenance and exercise. Great article. Keep up the good work.

Yes, the less you have to force yourself when it comes to eating only certain things, (like diets), the better your chance of developing healthy eating habits to suit yourself.

Great article. I like the "forget dieting" part because I believe one should eat healthy foods and not allowing himself to experience hunger, because hunger may lead to overeating. Thanks Joe.

Haha I started going to the gym yesterday. First time in about 8 years and I can't tell you how sore I am writing this comment! I am just trying to lose some belly fat; I understand that carbs should be kept at a minimum and also cardio is important but can you give me some other advice? As for food I eat mostly fruit and vegetable. I don't consider it a "diet", more of a "healthier eating habit"

Do you only eat veg and fruit because of being a vegan? If not lean meat or fish is great for protein and B complex vitamins. Also keep in mind that muscle will burn more calories, even at rest, then fat. So you would probably want a combo of cardio and weight lifting.

Joe I have often wondered if all these diet supplements are actually worth anything, or if just simple correct eating and exercise are not the order of the day. I saw a blood doctor once who analysed my blood under a micro while still fresh, and she put me on a special eating regime. I could eat as much as I wanted but only of certain food groups and nothing of others. I never felt hungry as I could eat but the weight just fell off me, showing that it is certain food groups that where bad for me. I lost 22kg in 3 months and never felt healthier. When I need to loose the odd pound, I avoid the groups she took me off and I drop quickly. Obviously the groups include the high sugar, wheat and certain meats, but it works without having to reduce intake.

Exactly Rob I think for the vast majority of people you're right; common sense eating habits and being active. I don't remember all the details but my sister went on a diet according to her blood type a few years ago and she swears by it. If you think about it, it does seem to make sense, I think I might look into that in more detail. Thanks Rob

I love your comment "Forget dieting, you need to develop long term healthy eating habits". Having never had to worry about dieting I've often wondered that this point is so often overlooked! I think we all need to take responsibility for what goes in our mouth and educate ourselves. There is so much misinformation out there. Low fat foods are a prime example. I find for myself that depriving myself never works but I can substitute healthier choices on almost everything if I put my mind to it.
