Weight Loss: Don’t Do it Alone

Trying to lose weight can throw some people into fits of despair or even clinical depression—which can lead to more weight gain, in a vicious cycle. It can also lead to people believing it’s “impossible” for them to lose weight. It’s not impossible, and that shouldn’t make them feel bad. Instead, it should make them feel hopeful. All too often, the only thing the person is missing is the right type of support.

Why is Support so Important?

Most of us aren’t in the most positive mindset when we recognize we’ve let our weight get out of control. It’s good, of course, to recognize this problem, and good to want to better ourselves, but when it comes from a place of deep negativity it’s difficult to accomplish without help.

• Enthusiasm

A lot of people think that weight loss takes will power. It does, but more important than will power is enthusiasm. Enthusiasm for what a person is doing for themselves, enthusiasm for the results that will come, enthusiasm for each healthy choice made, and each mini goal accomplished. However, when someone is depressed or frustrated, that enthusiasm can be incredibly difficult to muster up alone. That’s one of the reasons support is so important.

• Encouragement

Encouragement can be hard to come by without a good support network. It’s encouraging to see weight go down on the scale, but the scale doesn’t always reflect one’s efforts accurately. It’s also encouraging when people make comments about weight loss, but sometimes the results of eating healthy aren’t immediately visible. A good support network isn’t one that simply notes what the scale says or can see visible changes. It’s a support system that recognizes the effort being made by the individual and applauds it.

• Staying on Track

Some weight loss journeys take longer than others, and getting to a goal weight may take months or even years. It’s very difficult to maintain enthusiasm alone over the long term, or to stay motivated to keep one’s diet on track. A good support system can help the individual by cheering them on, not only at the beginning, and not only when they reach their goal, but at every stage in between. In fact, the most important point in one’s journey, and the hardest, is midway, and that can be the most difficult time to feel that there’s a support system cheering you on.

Finding Support

Not everyone’s family and friend group is going to provide adequate support for a weight loss journey, and that’s okay. It’s even a bit unfair to put that burden solely on loved ones. That doesn’t mean that someone losing weight should struggle through without support, however. Instead, it means they should seek support from other, more dedicated sources. These could be weight loss or overeating support groups, weight loss organizations, or even weight loss clinics. Weight loss clinics are the optimal choice for those who are really struggling with losing weight, because they understand how important support is.
