The weight loss industry brings in billions of dollars every year. If everyone should find a diet plan, exercise or supplement that works and keeps their weight off, they will lose all of that money because who will need them any longer? But, most people know that there are no magic pills on the market that will allow for easy, permanent weight loss. Those same people may not realize that it is not only the diet industry as a whole that is hoping they fail at their latest efforts. The others might be a shocker and they may be harder to deal with.
Friends and family can be hard on a diet plan. Fifty percent of all dieters reported that they have been pressured to eat things that did not fit their diet plan even after telling their friends, family members and coworkers that they were trying to eat better. An even higher percentage (56%) of those pressured people admit that they gave in. According to the same survey, there were several ways that these people tried to undo any progress including offering to buy lunch or dinner out, or bringing food to the person's home. While offering to pick up the check might sound like a nice thing, it is actually a passive aggressive attempt to take control of what that person is eating, adding in guilt and financial considerations.
Another way that even the most well meaning people might be sabotaging your diet plans is by making comments that may make you feel guilty because they are "worried" about you. They might also try to dissuade you from your current plan by suggesting crazy trends and fad diets instead. They always know at least two people who had great success on this diet or that one but never explain why they don't use it themselves.
Coworkers are hard to deal with, especially the ones that have candies, cookies and other treats on their desk at all times. They even wander around with their treats trying to tempt others to taste what they have. You can deflect them and you usually only have to deal with them for a few hours each day. Your biggest challenge in the weight loss battle is not just in your own fridge but your family as well. They are the ones who will wring their hands and worry that you are getting too skinny or that you are starting to look sickly. Stay strong. They mean well and they all have their reasons for their behavior. If you want to lose weight though, you have to be strong in the face of all challenges, even when they are family.
Wonderful article!! So much truth in this article, you do have to learn to be strong because it can be a challenge!
