Having a correct mindset and a few materials are really the only things that someone needs when they start to run. It does not take much effort to achieve either of those. Running is a mental sport, and once you have that mindset, running will not be very difficult for you. You will be motivated and look forward to your next run. You also need a pair of running shoes (believe it or not, there are people who do not ever run with them!), and a few other bits of gear, but much you probably have already. After you have the correct mental attitude and a few pieces of physical gear, you will be able to run!
Running is a mental game. You can achieve tremendous accomplishments when you are running if you think you can. It is a true saying that if you think you can, you can. The opposite is probably true, as well. Do not go into a run wondering if you will finish it - think instead of how quickly you will finish. Many times when I am on a run (especially when I run the same routes) I have to turn to myself and think how good it will feel by finishing this run. Even if you are struggling, you will not feel better by stopping or slowing down; try to run a little faster and see if that helps. Confidence is key when going out on a run.
Most of the gear you will need you probably already have, or you can make a quick stop at the store and purchase much of it. The first thing that comes to mind are shoes. You do not have to break the bank to buy a pair, but at least try to go to a specialty shop and pick up a pair that fits your running style. The way people run varies, so try to make an effort to getting a pair which fits your style. Running shorts and a shirt are musts for warm weather runs (if you can get a technical running shirt, get that because it will keep you cooler). When it is cold, pick up some compression shirts or sweat shirts. Also look for some sweat parts or wind pants to combat the cold. A hat and gloves will also keep you warm during the cold months.
Those are the two elementary keys to running. It does not take a huge production to run, which makes it such a great sport. It is a great sports because you can get into shape, lose weight, and compete against your peers in road races.
