In the easternmost of Indonesia there is a big island called West Papua or now popular with Papua. This island has a very rich soil, jungles like in Africa and people like the African race too.
Beside the gold mine and other precious mineral that is still unexplored, the fascinating flora and fauna also are still hidden in the island.
One rare species of bird live in the jungle of Papua. They call it Bird Of Paradise or Cenderawasih is the Indonesian name. This bird has a beautiful combination black, gold, orange and reddish-brown color, some of them has a white, blue, green and purple colors like the phoenix in China. People believe this bird comes from heaven and brings luck to the owner.
Out of the 45 species of this bird, 30 could be found in Indonesia and 28 from Papua. The Latin name of this bird is Paradisaea Apoda.
The male bird is the most beautiful one and it can dance beautifully. This bird's habit is playing in the branches of trees after the sunrise, fluffed out their beautiful feathers to attract the female bird.
Cenderawasih usually has a golden color had, and it has a four wings. It has a two long tails like antenna, which make them look beautifully unique.
People that believe in supra – natural, would buy this bird in a very high price, as it is rare and can bring good luck in business. Legend also says that this bird belong to God, as it feet never touch the earth. Its egg if soaked into a glass of water will glow radiant red like electric bulb. With this fact people believes more that this bird has a magical power.
Other rare fauna in Papua are tree kangaroo, fresh water crocodiles, the world's longest lizard, the world's biggest butterflies and unique type of parrots and cockatoos. Hunters and collectors were hunting these animals including bird of paradise since centuries.
There are many things to explore about the beauty of this island. As the youngest province in Indonesia, not much development done, especially in the remote areas.
Some Papuas people are still very primitive with their animism belief, and live secluded in the villages inside the jungles.
The biggest city is Jayapura. The city is on the hill facing the ocean, a breathtaking panorama, natural and untouchable.
Nowadays, there are some tours and travel to West Papua, especially to the beautiful beach of “Raja Ampat” while exploring some tourist developing parts of the island.
