Over the course of time, window screens can start to look unattractive as a result of debris, bugs and dirt. A window screen that has become dirty is not only unattractive, but it can take away from the overall appeal of the home. The proper way to clean a window screen can be an easy process; however, there are specific tricks and tips that can make the process go more smoothly. Below are the best methods on how to clean window screens.
Spray The Window Screen
The most commonly used method on how to clean window screens is to spray the screen with water. This is an ideal way to remove a light amount of dirt that has collected into the mesh. This is easily accomplished using a normal garden hose. Spraying the window screen with water can get rid of any dirt or debris that has collected.
In the case of thicker stains and dirt, a high pressure washer is the best way to clean the screen. This process is ideal for saving time as well as energy. Basic pressure washers are more than capable of getting the job done. This process uses plain water and a small to moderate amount of pressure to remove the dirt from the mesh.
When considering a high pressure washer, it is important to remember that the high pressure coupled with the thin mesh may cause the mesh to detach from the frame or to rip. Although this method is faster and easier to complete, it is important to take the necessary precautions to preserve the window screen.
Degreasers Work Wonders
For times when the dirt or debris appears greasy and thick; a high-quality degreaser is the best option when water alone is not effective. There are several types of all purpose degreasers on the market. These degreasers are sprayed on and wiped away to clean the screen. For tougher stains, a soft bristle brush may be required. The brush is used to loosen the dirt that is typically difficult to remove. After the degreaser and the brush are used, a hose or a pressure washer should be used to rinse the screen clean. This is an effective method on how to clean windows screens.
Boil Some Water
Use boiling water is a trick that is not commonly used; however, this trick is effective. Many times if the grease or the grime is not quick to respond to a degreaser, then hot water is the best alternative.
In most cases, hot water is effective for disrupting the bond between the dirt and the grease. When using hot water, simply submerge the screens under water for up to 5 minutes. Typically, a bathtub or shallow container will work well.
Try The Clothes Washers
This process only works for screens that are made of vinyl mesh. Although this method is not as popular as the others, it is effective. The technique requires the window screen to be disassembled.
Simply wash the screen on a gentle cycle with hot water. For best results, the screen does not require a spin cycle. After the screens are finished, they should be laid out on a table. Placing anything on top of the screen should allow the screen to maintain its shape.
