An Edgestar wine cooler can help you to keep your wine properly for long periods of time. In this article we will have a look at how to store your wine properly and also why it is important.
Why store your wine in a wine cooler?
Wine needs to be kept at a relatively constant temperature for it to age properly. To do this wine should be kept in a cellar or alternatively a wine fridge or wine cooler. If you do not keep your wine at a constant temperature the your wine may become oxidized and turn bad.
What is Oxidization?
Oxidization happens when oxygen enter the wine and it speeds up the chemical processes that are happening in the wine itself. Oxygen is actually good for your wine if you plan on drinking it - this is why we let wine breathe or why we aerate wine. But if oxygen enters your wine and you are unaware of it in a few days you wine will actually turn bad or off. So air is good when you open the bottle and are about to drink your wine - but bad when you are storing it.
How to keep your wine
You should keep your wine at a constant temperature of about 13 or 14 degrees. This is perfect for wine. Anything much hotter than this and your wine will cook or stew in the bottle and it will end up tasting bad. Never leave your wine in the sun either as the sunlight or UV can cause the chemical reactions that are happening inside the wine to go haywire. If your wine is kept somewhere too cold it will freeze and also expand. When your wine contracts and expands the cork is pushed up and down inside the bottle ands this allows small amounts of air to enter the bottle. Remember air is bad when storing wine and this results in oxidized wine.
Humidity
You may often see wine bottle lying down. This is really only necessary if the wine is being stored under cork. What this is doing is keeping the cork moist so that it does not dry out. You may also want to have a certain level of humidity in a wine cellar or wine cooler of around about 60%. This stops the corks from drying out and shrinking. When corks shrink, again the move up and down inside the bottle and this results in air entering the bottle. Again air is bad when you are storing your wine and the end result is wine that tastes terrible - it is basically undrinkable. An Edgestar wine cooler allows you to keep your wine properly so that it can age. If you keep your wine in a cellar or something similar to an Edgestar wine cooler you should have no problems with your wine aging properly.
