Health Benefits Of Red Wine

I enjoy a good old glass of wine when I get home from work, especially when I’m cooking dinner. I enjoy white, red and rose (obviously not at the same time!) but with all the health warnings that are put out there these days it was starting to make me think that maybe I should not be drinking anything at all.

But I had heard that red wine was actually good for you IF you drink it in moderation. So what exactly are the benefits of Red Wine?

Apparently research has proven that the antioxidants found in red wine are beneficial for a few health reasons. The main one being the heart, as antioxidants in red wine otherwise known as polyphenol may help protect the lining of the blood vessels in your heart. It also increases levels of “good’ cholesterol and protecting against artery damage.

White wine is also said to be good for the heart as well but does not contain nearly as much antioxidants as red, this is due to the fact that red wine is made from whole grapes - skin, seed and all.

Scientists have long puzzled over the fact that people in regions of France where food is soaked in saturated fat and a high number of people of smoke, have astonishingly healthy hearts and arteries. This has become know as the French paradox; a paradox that began further examination of the benefits of wine.

The flavonoids found in wine and grapes are also been known to be beneficial for skin. Research has shown that flavonoids in grapes protect the skin from UV light and keep it elastic. It also strengthens the cross-lining of collagen reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. So why not just eat grapes? Well, apparently 1 or 2 glasses of red a day is much richer in anti-oxidants and you would have to eat a lot of grapes to get the same benefit. Which is good for me as I like the odd grape as well as a glass of wine - maybe I’ll have both at the same time!

Flavonoids in wine have also been linked to reducing colds. Flavonoids work more against nasal viruses and this in turn is thought to help fight against the excess of harmful chemicals that is naturally produced by the body. Another ingredient, resveratol, helps to reduce inflammation in the nose and airways, which happens when the immune system is fighting viruses.

So it just goes to show that a little bit of what you fancy and everything in moderation does do you good - cheers!
