Islay Malt Whisky Distillery

One particularly fine example of the distillers art is Islay Malt Whisky. The brands from this beautiful island tend to be very distinctive and once tried, rarley forgotton.

Islay Malt Whisky does tend to the peaty side and indeed so much so in some cases that it is often too much for some people. It is one of those things that you either love or hate, but there is probably enough variation among the different distilleries to keep most people happy.

The peaty taste of Islay Malt Whisky is as a result of the use of the drying process following the malting of the barley. The proportion of peat dried malt used in different brands varies and that is what makes each one individual. In some cases the water used to steep the barley may be from the peat too.

As a rule the distilleries to the south of the island produce the peatiest brands while those to the north are less so.

The Islay Malt Whisky Distilleries

There are several malt whisky distilleries on the island. Most of which are by the coast. The proximity of the sea is reputed to add to the character of each brand in barrel in some cases. The Islay Malt whisky distilleries are

Ardbeg Dating back to 1794 and closed for a while in the 1980s it is now going from strength to strength. A particularly fine peaty whisky is distinctive of the distillery.

Bruichladdich Established in 1881 and extended in the 1970s but little changed over the years.

Bowmore One that is in between the peatier offerings to the south and the gentler malts from the north.

Caol Ila Once hard to come by this whisky, much appreciated by many is more readily available. The distillery was established in 1846 and modernised in the 1970s.

Lagavoulin One of the best known of the Islay malts with its distinctive peaty flavour. Partly as aresult of the heavy smoking and also the water used. A classic Islay malt.

Laphroaig One of my personal favourites. Described by one of my friends as like paint stripper, by others as medicine but by many of us who appreciate the peaty, iodine flavourings of this wonderful whisky it is a masterpiece.

Bunnahaibhain Meaning the "mouth of the river" actually established a whole community as a result of its existence.

Kilchoman Is a real newcomer and the first to be built for 124 years. It is very small establishment but prides itself on carrying out as many of the processes as it can rather than buying in all its malt as some distilleries do nowadays.

You can find out more about all these whiskies and more at Buy Whisky Online there are tasting notes and also pages where you can buy almost any whisky on the market.
