New Highland Park Viking Brand for Duty Free

How many of you buy duty free when you travel? Do you like to treat your self to something special now and again or are you on the look out for a bargain as you pass through an airport?

Highland Park, which also happens to be Scotland's most northerly distillery has announced a special new blend with a Viking inspiration as an addition to its Vintage Collection range. This carefully produced single malt whisky is targeted almost entirely at the traveler and will be available only in duty free shops.

This is not the only unusual thing about this new whisky. All others in the Vintage range are 40% when put into bottle but this particular single malt has been bottled at 47.8%, an unusual departure but one intended to set it out as different from the rest.

The Highland Park distillery is on Mainland Orkney and the Isles of Orkney are long associated with Viking visitors. It is for this reason and because of their prowess as great travellers that the new single malt has been given its name.

The theme is exemplified by the labelling which features a carved prow from a Viking longboat. This is based on an original carving by a Viking craftsman known as 'the Academician'. The particularly skillful artwork involves complex swirling patterns with birdlike creatures. The original inspiration is from an excavation of a Viking site that was carried out in 1904.

The distinctive flavour is established by the use of oak casks from both Europe and America and different types of cask are used in the different Highland Park whiskies to give each a different character.

The Highland Park distillery was established in 1798 before the great surge in legal whisky distilling after the Excise act of 1823. The name is nothing to do with the Highland region of Scotland but more to do with its position as a high point on Orkney.

As such a long established distillery Highland Park is slightly unusual because it produces it own malt from local barley and dries it with local peat fires too. The rest of the malt used is sourced from mainland Scotland.

The Highland Park brand has won many awards and its whiskies are highly rated worldwide. it is because of this that the Viking inspired single malt whisky has been produced with it being marketed as a treat for the traveller or as a special gift to take home for someone special. As far as I know you cannot buy this whisky online although of course there are many brands that are available to buy this way world wide.
