Ohio wineries come in all shapes and sizes. By shape, I mean some either cater to their entertainment or some their food menu. Or some even cater to the mood, the setting, the ambiance they attempt to portray. I guess this is OK, whatever floats their boat! Each owner will attempt to find a little niche: entertainment, food, ambiance or hmm maybe wine should be the niche a winery owner in Ohio concentrates on?
After all, the majority of new people that will visit their establishment come in hopes of finding a new favorite wine. Of course there are regulars at each winery that make weekly visits faithfully. But to get new and returning customers the winery needs to put more focus on producing quality wine
Some of the owners have forgotten this. Not all, but there are definitely some that have. Meaning they put the production of quality wine last on their list of things to do.
I hate to say this but I have seen a re-occurring trend in this.
What exactly is the trend of Ohio wineries
Big wineries. They grow big and after they get there they start thinking of ways to increase their revenues, so what usually happens is they take all the money they made and invest it in trying to become more of a restaurant, they invest money in getting the best entertainers to preform, they invest money in creating ambiance. What is forgotten?
They forget to invest money in the area of improving their wine. In fact, what I have noticed is, in the majority of the cases, the bigger a winery grows the bigger decrease in the quality of wine they produce.
Smaller Ohio wineries
If your goal is to find quality wines produced in Ohio, I recommend looking into smaller wineries. They usually do not have a huge marketing budget so of course you probably never heard of them. If you enjoy wine and live in northeast Ohio, I am sure you have heard of Debonne winery. They are one of the largest in the state and have a big marketing budget so of course you would have heard of them.
Making a visit to Debonne, they had a nice food menu, nice entertainment, the ambiance was great. But what was missing? Well... This is my opinion, what I felt was missing was quality wine. Not that their wine is terrible but you would think such a big place would have the best wine in the area.
What I have found is some of the smaller wineries in northeast Ohio produce the best wine. Places you probably have never even heard of. One very good example of this is Al-Bi Winery located in Dellroy Ohio.
