Why Whine Over Wine

Really there is no accounting for taste especially if you enjoy wine. I mean really who can say what goes on when wine meets palate? In years past, everyone who was anyone (at least that's what they thought) suggested the best wines came from France or Italy.

The only other popular vintages out of the European market were Port from Portugal or Reisling from Germany. California was ripe with blush wines and white Zinfandel's. Ugh! And these wines were apparently aperitief's.

How did one pair these with a roasted lamb or a or a Chilean Sea Bass? As appreciation and production grew in the 70's and 80's so did finding places to grow this fruit.

Leap forward to the new millenium and we are enjoying wines from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil. Who was drinking wine from South Africa to southern Australia?

Let alone New Jersey. It seems as inevitable that the science of wine making and by this I don't mean production (I personally think of mass) when I hear that word, would expand so globally. Now you might wonder what right does Chile have to produce Syrah when the varietal was originally from France? Well simply put stony granite and sunshine. Whose palate is more attuned to this a Frenchmen or a Chilean?

I ask you, "Why whine over wine?" If it tastes good and mixes well with your objective, don't fret over it. Unless you travel in exclusive circles of experts, who is going to question your choices? Bill the middle manager from the 3rd floor of your office? Sam and Pat from your childs little league team? You will sound like the expert when you state, "I discovered this wine from a small winery located in the New South Wales part of Australia or better yet from a small vintnor from Southern New Jersey.

So, in conclusion, the age old question must be asked, "why whine over wine?" With so many varieties, places, types of soil, sunshine, climate, or sea level what it comes down to is what happens when that crushed grape enters your mouth and completes a meal.

The wine brought to your table may cost $100.00 and come from a faraway land or it may cost $6.00 and come from the small winery from down the road. It really is just a matter of personal taste and who can account for your taste but you? Stay thirsty my friend.

Street Talk

Katie, So true! I had a great glass of red wine last night. No idea where it was from or what it was called. Just that I enjoyed it, all by itself, not paired with anything. Just that three of us sat down to visit and an extra glass got poured. So I enjoyed it! Then ate leftover chicken:-) blessings, Cynthia
