Purchasing a wine cooler can be somewhat of a daunting task and you are probably reading wine cooler reviews and thinking of many things like what size you should get and how many bottles you want to store. You may be asking yourself questions like 'Will I be storing mainly red wine or white wine?' and 'what if I want to store both?'
You may be surprised to know that there are actually wine coolers out there that have dual compartments and are good for storing both red and white wines at there optimum drinking temperatures and we will have a look at those later in this article. But first lets have a look at why we should keep wine in a wine cooler.
It is actually quite important to keep wine at a stable and constant temperature. Around 13-15 degrees Celsius is desirable. Anything too hot and the wine starts to expand and it will kind of cook itself - this will leave you with a bottle of wine that tastes like boiled raisins. If you keep wine a temperature that is too cold it will actually shrink inside the bottle and kind of freeze.
This shrinking and expanding over time will dislodge the cork seal and allow small amounts of air to get inside the bottle causing oxidization. It also speeds up and slows down the wines chemical reactions with very bad consequences.
It is also really important to keep your wine in a place that is quite humid, as this will keep the corks in good condition. If the place you are storing your wine in is too dry then the corks will dry out and shrink causing oxygen to get into the wine and slowly start the oxidizing process. A humidity level of about 70% is the bets but anywhere between 55 and 80% is also not too bad.
Never get below 50%, as this is not good. You can make the humidity level rise by keeping a bucket of water in your wine cellar or also by using a humidifier. Never keep your wine in your household fridge, as the humidity level is very low - around 20%. Wine cooler reviews that you find online will often tell you if the wine cooler has a humidity tray or not.
Also keep your wine out of sunlight and away from UV lights - many wine cooler reviews also have information on wine coolers that have UV filtration glass doors and these are quite important.
