If you want to store and age your wine then it is very important to keep it at a constant temperature. There are many wine cooler reviews online and not many of them actually tell you why you should store your wine correctly or how to do so. Lets have a look at why it is important to look after your wine properly by storing it in a wine cooler.
You should store your wine at a steady temperature of around 13 Deg C. If you store your wine at a temperature that is too hot it will cook and end up tasting bad.
Wine is best kept at a constant temperature, if the temperature sways too much it can have detrimental effects on your wine and cause it to expand and contract pushing the cork in and out of the bottle ever so slightly and allowing oxygen to enter the bottle and oxidize the wine.
Think about wine as a chemical reaction (there are chemical reactions taking place inside the bottle) and with age this causes the wine to develop and taste better. If the temperature is too hot then the chemical reaction is sped up and if the wine is stored in a place that is too cold then the aging process slows right down. Oxygen in the bottle is the worst thing that can happen to wine.
It is best to store your wine on its side so that the cork can keep moist and not dry out - for the same reasons mentioned above. Sparkling wines and Champagne can be stored standing up as the carbon dioxide that is produced by these variety of wine keeps the oxygen out of the neck of the bottle.
Humidity is another important factor to think about when keeping wine. Again we don't want the cork to shrink - keeping the humidity level at around 70 % is ideal for storing wine. 50-80% is also good. Many wine cooler reviews will tell you if the wine cooler has a humidity tray or not.
A standard fridge or air conditioner is programmed to run at about 20% humidity - this is not good. One easy way to increase humidity is to get a bowl of water or even buy a humidifier - too much humidity may damage your labels but it won't harm your wine.
Also it is best to keep your wine is a dark place or in a cooler with a UV proof glass door as light can also damage wine. You should think about these things when you are looking at wine cooler reviews.
