How To Buy Comfortable Shoes

So many of us love shoes and will happily impulse buy a new pair. But do we always buy comfortable shoes? Answer no! A 2009 study by the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists said that 37% of women are prepared to buy uncomfortable shoes as long as their fashionable and almost more alarmingly 80% of respondents admitted suffering from, corns, bunions, cracked feet and ingrowing toe nails. Now come on ladies, this really doesn’t make sense. Having ill-fitting shoes not only causes foot problems but can also lead to lower back pain. However, by following just a few sensible tips, you can buy comfortable shoes without sacrificing your love of fashion.

1. Be prepared.

Before you embark on your planned shopping trip for new shoes – ensure that your feet are clean, with nails cut to a suitable length. Also take appropriate socks and tights with you. Trying on a pair of court shoes with socks, makes no sense if you always wear tights. Yes they do often have thin foot tights you can use in the shop – but it’s much better to have your own.

2. Check your size.

Too many of us assume that we have the same foot size year after year, but this is not the case. Our feet can change in shape and size due to pregnancy, weight gain or just age. The ligaments and soft tissues within our feet will stretch and relax as we age and suffer the normal wear and tear of being used! So take care of your feet and have them measured by a professional shoe fitter once or twice a year. Don’t try and do it yourself. You want to buy comfortable shoes for your size.

3. Buy shoes for the larger foot.

Having two different sized feet is common for many people. The difference is not always an issue, but it clearly makes sense to buy shoes that fit the larger foot. There are a variety of inserts on the market that can be added to shoes, but you cannot add space (and toes hanging over the edge of a sandal is not a good look!)

4. Shoe shop later in the day.

Of course this isn’t always practical, but most people’s feet increase over the course of the day. Buying them late afternoon, early evening means that you will buy shoes when your feet are at their largest, a strategy which means you are less likely to buy a pair of shoes that are too tight.

5. Don’t cramp your toes

We have all seen pictures of some well known models and designers with deformed toes. When buying shoes, your toes need room to move. Callouses and bunions are just two problems that it’s possible to develop from wearing poor fitting shoes. It’s quite safe to have up to 1/2 “ after your longest toe and 1/8” round the back of the heel.

6. Check your posture

Make sure that you stand in front of a full length mirror before you buy shoes. We know that Chiropodists and Podiatrists recommend heels of no more than 1 1/2” , but that a piece of advice that many of us will chose to ignore. But be sensible and check that they are not thrusting your body forward.

7. Buy comfortable shoes.

Yes, this is a very obvious tip but how often have you bought a pair of shoes that feel a bit tight in the shop and hope they will stretch when you get them home? Don’t do it. The chances are they will never be comfortable. Equally, check your shoes for any slight defects or buckles and straps that rub and irritate.
