Is it the Baby Blues or Postpartum Depression?

Is it the Baby Blues or Depression? How can you tell the difference? Most women have some form of the baby blues after they give birth. If you are feeling sad, anxious and overwhelmed, this is normal. So are mood swings, crying jags, a loss of appetite and a loss of sleep or trouble with sleep. This is normal and goes away within in a few weeks. There are many life changes going on and this is a healthy, normal reaction to those changes.

However, if your symptoms include wanting to hurt yourself or your baby, then there is something more "pressing" going on. If you are also losing interest in your baby this too could be a symptom of Postpartum. I felt all of these things and did not realize that I was heading off the deep end. I needed treatment and it was months later when I finally got it.

If your symptoms include hallucinations, confusion, extreme mood shifts and trying to hurt yourself or your baby, you may be suffering from an extreme form of Postpartum Depression which is called postpartum psychosis. This is a rare condition and affects about one in 1,000 new moms. These symptoms usually occur within the first two weeks after birth. Women who have had a history of mental illness or depression have a higher risk.

I was a border line candidate for the psychosis diagnosis. I did not hallucinate or see things that were not there, but I had extreme mood swings and cried incessantly. I did not nor could I have a positive thought about the future. I was later diagnosed as having "hypo-mania" where i would go from feeling incredibly "High" to feeling incredibly "low". I was also terribly confused and felt incapable of being a mom.

It was going to be a long road back for me. I felt like I'd had a "Mental" car wreck and I was going to have to learn how to walk all over again. Support and asking for help were essential for me to come back from where I was. I was pretty far gone, but I am also extremely stubborn and that tenacity was what brought me back to stable mental health. It was a long, painful day at a time, but recovery came along with challenge of being a new mom. Sometimes it all comes at you at once. But, I am reminded of that saying, "what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger."
