Ok before I talk about the caring for your natural curly hair I would like to say something about perms. DONT USE THEM!!! Do you know anyone who perms their hair every two months and their hair is still the same length? I know a lot of people who's hair never grows. It's because relaxers strip away the oil from our hair and it breaks off from the root, permed hair is dry hair. Here is what perms are made out of.
Sodium hydroxide – this chemical is corrosive and causes severe burns to the skin. It’s able to burn through layers of skin. Do you feel burning when you are getting your hair relaxed?
Phosphoric acid – This is a known health hazard. It is toxic to the nervous, respiratory, skin and sense organs. Also can lead to burns. In mild concentrations it causes skin irritation.
Ammonium hydroxide – Research is proving that it may be the cause of respiratory toxins.
And this is just some, I didn't list all the ingredients, but by reading this, what makes you think your hair is healthy once you put a perm in? So the natural you is the best way to go.
The care and keeping of the natural curly you. How do you maintain length? Well I think of curly hair (African American hair and biracial hair) as a plant. A plant needs water to grow, so your hair needs water to grow. So you simply keep your hair damp in the roots. I don't mean you have to drench your hair but you take a spray water and fill it half way with water and the other half with leave in conditioner and you shake well. With me I use rosemary water, I boil rosemary leaves with water (like i'm making tea) and after it boils I strain the leaves out and put the rosemary water in a spray bottle and I spray it on my roots. After you have your bottle you spritz the water all over the roots of your hair. Once you have the water on your roots and you coat it with coconut oil (well that's what I do) I usually take some olive oil and put it on the ends of my hair. As you can see in my profile picture my hair is pretty thick so I have to wet my roots twice a day.
If you have damaged hair and it doesn't seem to grow due to heat or relaxers, then the only way to get your hair healthy again is to shave it all off and start fresh. Like a nail, if your nail is split then it'll grow unevenly but in order to get the nail to grow healthy again you have to snip off the nail. So do the same for your hair.
Curly and straight hair are very different. Straight hair is easy to run your fingers through, it's easier to comb. But curly hair tends to be more dry, it's more thick. So if you want to comb curly hair hair while dry then you have to section and comb it. Comb from the bottom and work your way to the top to prevent breakage.
