Stopping Women’s Hair Loss

A brief overview of hair growth: 90% of your hair is in a growth period that lasts approximately 2-8 years. A transition phase lasts 2-3 weeks and in that period the hair follicle shrinks. The next phase lasts 2-4 months where only about 10% of your hair is resting at any one time and you lose about 50-100 strands of hair each day. Washing your hair, you can lose about 250 strands. Avoiding washing your hair won’t stop the loss; the hair will fall out eventually in any event. Ordinarily, when a normal hair follicle is shed, it is replaced by a comparable hair follicle.

If you are suffering hair loss and your part is getting wider, there is a wide range of conditions that may be the cause of your hair loss. And you are not alone, by the age of 50, 50% of women experience some kind of hair loss. There are many, many reasons for hair loss; some of the most common reasons are thyroid disorders, anemia, autoimmune diseases, polycystic ovary syndrome, and/or skin conditions, psoriasis or deborrheic, and/or prescriptions such as antidepressants, beta-blockers, and non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs. Any of these factors can cause your hair to shed.

Extreme stress, a surgery or a serious illness, a drastic loss of weight in a very short period of time, too much Vitamin A, or even a poor diet can also be found to be the reason for your hair loss. In these cases hair loss can occur within a couple of weeks to six months after you’ve experienced any of these causes.

You could be causing loss of your hair with dryers and flat irons, styling it into ponytails, cornrows or braids that are too tight, using hair dyes, chemical treatments, or using the wrong type of brush.

Or it could be Hereditary Female Pattern Baldness.

You should see your doctor and get checked out as soon as you notice abnormal hair loss. The sooner you see a doctor, the sooner you can stop the loss of hair.

If your hair loss is from stress, as soon as you find a way to relieve the stress your hair will see a regrowth within 6 months, if it is from a prescription drug, ask your doctor to either change the dosage or prescribe a different drug. As soon as that drug is out of your system you should see a regrowth.

Hereditary Female Pattern Baldness is caused by hormone changes due to menopause, levels of androgens or male hormones, aging and or a family history of male or female pattern baldness. If this is the case, your doctor will probably prescribe 2% minoxidil which is rubbed into your scalp. Hereditary Female pattern baldness is not a sign of any underlying medical disorder. Minoxidil will help regrowth of hair; however, if you stop using minoxidil, hair loss will reoccur.

In the meantime there are many things that you can do to make you hair look fuller; the right cut and color is a great start. You can also change your part because when you brush your hair in the same direction constantly it tends to flatten. By changing the direction when you brush your hair it will look fuller because it’s not laying flat against your scalp.

Put your hair dryer away or at the very least use it at the lowest heat level possible. When using your hair dryer, avoid at all costs using a metal brush which will cause breakage. Use a brush with round bristles of boar or nylon.

Get a shorter cut with interior layers throughout to add fullness. Longer hair will separate in sections showing glimpses of your scalp.

Try to avoid coloring your entire head of hair to avoid breakage. Have your stylist place highlights around your head, especially your face, instead.

Use products specifically made for thinning hair. Umberto Beverly Hills Volume Shampoo (Target) works very well as does Full by Living Proof Root Lifting Spray by making your hair look fuller and thicker.
