Women undergo abdominal surgeries for different reasons. The common types of surgeries include myomectomy, caesarean section ( C section )and Laparoscopy.
Myomectomy is used for removing fibroids, Caesarean section is done for delivering babies surgically and Laparoscopy involves the treatment of endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cyst.
All surgeries need special care. Follow the following steps after surgery to take a better care of you.
Activity After Surgery
• Avoid hard exercise for 4-6 weeks
• Only start walking for exercise as walking is the best exercise after surgery. You may feel tired because fatigue is common but walking builds the stamina.
• For the first 2 weeks, only showers should be taken.
Managing Pain Or Discomfort
Surgeries are always painful. It depends on the patient how she handles the pain.The patient must take pain medication after the surgery for managing the pain or discomfort. The pain is severe in the first 2-3 days. The patient also feels cramping and even shooting pain in the area of incision or even the area away from the incision but it’s normal. Moving hurts and the patient feels the burning sensation at time of urination so taking effective pain medication helps. The pain or discomfort lessens after 2-3 days.
Incision Care
The doctor or nurse will guide you to take care of the incisions and surgical wounds. There may be a single incision or 2-4 small incisions. There must be proper incision care and it must be kept clean. You must not rub or scratch your incision and don’t pull off the strip without the permission of a doctor. Don’t use any type of lotion or powder for the incision. Use only prescribed medicines and change the wound’s dressing as per doctor’s recommendations. Taking incision care is very important and if you will not take care of it may result in infection.
Diet and bowel issues
There are some bowel issues after every abdominal surgery. Some women face constipation. Patients are always concerned about their diet after the surgery. There is no restriction of diet but the patient must start with the liquids and then eat fiber rich food in order to overcome bowel issues. A well balanced diet is important after discharge. You can get instruction about your diet from your doctor and he will tell you how to add fiber in your diet. Also the food that causes gas must be avoided because of gas problem after surgery. The food include cauliflower, broccoli etc. if you are taking narcotic pain medicines, avoid taking alcohol. Walk is very helpful in maintaining proper bowel function.Tubal Ligation Reversal surgery is done to stop pregnancy when you want not more children.
Periods
When you have any gynecological surgery, the bleeding or discharge for a few weeks is normal. In the start, usually for the 3 and 4 cycles, the periods will not be normal. They will be light, short, long or heavy. You can expect anything while you are healing. But after some time, the cycle becomes normal. This technique is also used in performing tubal reversal surgery.
