Good Things About Menopause

The traditional medical community will tell you that as you enter menopause, you can look forward to these increased health risks:

A) urinary incontinence

B)cardiovascular disease

C)osteoporosis

D)mental decline

E)vision problems

To this, I say PHOOEY. You just need to take a couple of proactive steps and you can avoid these health maladies:

Yoga and specific exercises can strengthen the pelvic floor. ('A' is now fixed.)

Exercise is so important. Whether a regimented program or a walk in your neighborhood, exercise will improve your heart health. ('B' is now fixed.) (Oh wait, C and D is also fixed because you are doing load-bearing exercises and increasing oxygenation to your brain.)

Increase foods rich in vitamin A and take a good multivitamin with Lutein in it. (E is now fixed.)

OK, so I might be over-simplifying just a bit, but really, you can live a full life without any of the above ailments.

It is a beneficial to eat like Roy G Biv. That will guarantee improved health....GUARANTEED! But, who the heck is Roy G Biv and why do you want to eat like him? He is the spectrum of the rainbow. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet.

If you can eat just one food from each group listed below, your health status will sky-rocket and your risk of disease will plummet. Again, just one food from each list every day.

Red Foods: watermelon, cherries, strawberries, tomatoes, raspberries, radishes, red bell peppers, apples, pomegranate.

Orange Food: carrots, oranges, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, mango, tangerines, cantaloupe, apricots, peaches, kumquats

Yellow Food: bananas, squash, pineapple, starfruit, yellow bell peppers, lemons. Notice, I did not say CORN. Corn is a food that causes inflammation in many people. Best to avoid it, if you can.

Green: broccoli, cucumbers, celery, cabbage, zucchini, spinach, kiwi, artichoke, okra, honeydew, lime

Blue: blueberries

Indigo: (I am cheating here and listing white food) cauliflower, onions, potatoes, jicama

Violet: grapes, plums, red onions, red cabbage, eggplant, figs, raisins, prunes, blackberries, boysenberries.

So....what are the GOOD things about menopause??

  1. No more periods
  2. No more risk of pregnancy
  3. No more 'hormone' headaches
  4. More self-confidence
  5. New clarity on old problems. Intuitive's often become logical and logical gals tend to become intuitive.
  6. Feeling more grounded. Most won't worry quite as much.
  7. Feeling a closeness to nature
  8. Reassessing lifestyle, habits and nutrition
  9. Asserting your own thoughts and strengths. Tend to stop being a 'door-mat'.
  10. Taking time to enjoy the niceties of life. Most will start to use their fine china, put out the 'good' towels, wear the nice perfume.....just because.

A few tips for dealing with menopause symptoms:

Eat a well balanced diet (preferably organic)

Supplement with a high quality multi-vitamin

Utilize a quality herbal remedy

Practice slow, diaphragmatic breathing

Exercise regularly (cardio & core work – Zumba/Pilates)

Consider mediation or Yoga

I'm not at that point but think I may really have entered peri-menopause or else my body flipped out from a transatlantic relocation and what they do and do not do to food in Germany versus the USA. I don't think it can all be attributed to change in level of sexual activity. Anyway, it often helps be prepared to a stage of life or location by having some idea of what it is like, so I would rather be ready on menopause arrival than panicky and confused. Thanks so much.
