Heartburn Relief And Pregnancy - Make Some Changes And Think Of Holistic Solutions

If you have been pregnant for more than three months, there is a 50% chance that you are going to suffer from acid reflux. You may be looking around for heartburn relief and pregnancy solutions.

The basic problem seems to be the hormones which are released during pregnancy and these can have a direct effect on one part of your body which lies at the end of the oesophagus and the beginning of the stomach. This gateway is the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, which the hormones cause to open up so that all the stomach acid can travel upwards rather than anywhere else. This can cause considerable discomfort and the infamous burning sensation.

Normally the LES opens and closes on certain occasions. For example, it allows us to belch or release air through the upper respiratory tract and that is very convenient. The problems occur when it opens too often or is not closed as tightly as it should be.

One remedy is to drink less while eating. It is better to drink between meals. Another solution is to eat simple food with lots of fiber so fruit and vegetables will be at the top of your list. Also, you will have to avoid anything spicy or fried.

As regards citrus fruits these sometimes have to be limited as oranges and lemons tend to be rather acidic. Also milk itself which contains lactic acid so that can also set the whole acid reflux action going again.

It is much better to eat small meals at frequent intervals and try to drink between them, water of course. Avoid alcohol, chocolate and coffee.

As regards sleeping, one of the great heartburn relief and pregnancy solutions is to make sure that the head of your bed is a little raised so that there is no chance that the acid reflux can come up. If raising the bed just by a few inches, is a problem, a much easier solution is to use a higher pillow.

They say that chewing gum can also help because it produces more saliva to help digestion.The best thing is to avoid a mint flavor because mint can also start the acid reflux and heartburn going.

When going to bed at night, it is always better to wait for a few hours to allow the food to digest properly so that all the stomach acid will have been absorbed by your system. The last meal should be the smallest one anyway so this process will not take so long. Eating earlier helps too.
